I am a newblet when it comes to cigars. I think this Rocky Patel R4 is probably my 25th cigar. I am here on this forum because I was wondering if it was me or if this cigar just was really not worth it. I Don’t think its worth. I had to cut the end 5 times to get a draw that wasnt like breathing through a coffee stirrer and the flavor is extremely weak. I would pay 2 dollars not to smoke it again.

I am a huge RP fan, but have to say I am disappointed with the R4. No flavor at all, it was not worth smoking.

I’d have to say this rating is VERY generous. I’ve tried these cigars before and can’t imagine giving anything higher than a 72. Even the RP reps cringe when you mention the R4. No flavor (actualy tasted like mulch and didn’t smell much better when burned). It pains me to say this because I’m pretty much a big RP fan, but this cigar is best left on the shelves. Not even good enough for the mooches.

I had a fiver of the R4 Corojo line and I thought they had a cheap taste to them without much of a redeeming value and would not buy them again. Not much of a Rocky P. fan anymore after trying many of his sticks. R.P and Gurka’s lines of sticks are getting to be industrial cigars. Mass produced without much flavor.

Your a wizard with numbers. It makes sense 1200% more expensive and only 10% better quality. Now it’s easy to understand the monetary part but I’m unclear with the rating part. Is1% in a cigar rating the same as a dollar in the bank? If this was the case the Patel R4 would cost $84.00, I’m not sure which Padron your referring to but just as an example let’s plug in the Padron 1964 Principe Anniversary which is a great cigar and really only 1/2 the size of a Patel Robusto.The Padron 1964 Principe scored 100 points on this forum, so now we’re looking at a $100.00 cigar and it’s 1/2 of the size. Wait……I know what everyone’s thinking now, the cost of an equal Padron would be $200.00 to get the same amount of smoking time as the Patel Robusto. Well the calculations are correct and well respected; however I myself would rather have a $100.00 absolutely mind blowing never a bad one Padron than an $84.00 who’s know what’s going to happen or how it tastes Rocky Patel.
I should also mention I’m Lactose Intolerant and that milky aroma or flavor that Doc8466 mentioned may not agree with me. I’m always looking for bargain basement cigar and only hope that I will be able to smoke Padron’s, Fuente Anejo’s, Opus X’s, Ashton VSG’s, ESG’s or so many other $15-$30 cigars on a daily basis.

I would give it two more points, one for flavor and one for overall. The R4s I tried sound like they had a little more of a nutty creaminess throughout the middle third (compared to yours). Not a gem, but glad I tried it.

RIP Doc, I will definitely miss your early morning cigar reviews. In the meantime I eat cereal while I smoke my R4 Corojo. It’s the perfect combination!

Since Doc wrote this on 3 Feb (and it’s now 30 Mar without a reply), I guess we can assume the pneumonia got ‘em and he’s passed.

I spent over 2 hrs doing some simple organizing of my cigars, and while doing so pulled out one of my R4 Corojo torpedos. I lit it up while starting my evening perusal of stogie related sites and noted something very sweet on the cap. Not bad, but not something I’d expect from a corojo. Then 1/2 inch in, I got the distinct aroma of milk. That was a first, and if it never happened again it’d be ok with me. After that I couldn’t really get anything else out of it since I kept thinking milk milk milk…

The retro gave me some definite citrus, I’d go with lime I think.

Other than that it was uneventful. But with all said, I am getting over pneumonia so will give Rocky another try in a week or so to see if any of these notes show up or not.

Interesting way to look at it Arnie. As smoker who also is always in search of a ‘diamond in the rough’ in the $2-$3 range, I picked up a bundle of both the maduro and corojo R4. So far I haven’t tried the corojo but the maduro version in robusto is a nice simple straightforward Honduran tasting maduro. Don’t hold it in your mouth too long though ’cause your lips will turn dark brown from the dye he uses….
