Cigar Review: CAO LX2 Cuban Press

CAO LX2 Cuban Press

CAO LX2 Cuban Press

CAO recently released the Cuban Press series of smokes. These cigars come in a beautiful box that features 12 cigars. 3 each of the Brazila, Italia, MX2 and LX2. I was lucky enough to receive today’s smoke for review as a gift from one of the best people in the industry today. A video of the arrival of these cigars follows the review.

Cigar: CAO LX2
Size: 4 7/8 by 50 (Cuban Press)
Wrapper: Sungrown Nicaraguan
Binder: Honduras
Filler: Dominican Republic, Nicaragua
Strength: Full

Appearance and Construction (20/20): The Cuban press cigar feels great in the hand. The cigar in this format has virtually no veins and a lot of weight to it. The band is the standard dual LX2 label and on the foot is a silver and black band denoting the cigar is part of the Cuban Press line. The cigar is flawless and is well packed with no soft spots to speak of.

Flavor & Notes (28/30): The cigar starts of a little milder then a regular LX2 but the flavors are so much more intense. As we work our way through the first third the strength kicks in to high gear. The first third is a an intense spicy pepper that borders on cayenne. As the cigar approaches the second third the pepper begins to subside. Some chocolate notes begin to emerge but the pepper at times manages to overshadow. The final third of the cigar has notes of pepper and nuts with a lot of spice on the finish.

Burn/Ash/Draw (21/25): I know a lot of people who aren’t a fan of CAO because of burn issues. While I rarely see that, this cigar won’t change their minds. I had to touch it up a few times, but I expected that from a Cuban press going in. The ash was tight and white, and no flake. It held on for half of the cigar before I decided to ash. The draw was absolutely perfect.

Overall (22/25): The Cuban Press is a nice addition to the CAO line and the presentation makes for a great gift. Would I buy one, sure. The enhancement of the flavors are amazing, and the cigar gives a fan of CAO a renewed interest in a given line. Stay tuned as over the next few weeks as we review the Italia, Brazila and MX2 Box Press.
