Cigar Review: La Flor Dominicana Axe

La Flor Dominicana Axe

La Flor Dominicana Axe

According to Holt’s website, “Here is a symbolic cigar by La Flor Dominicana. Blended and manufactured by Litto Gomez in celebration of Holt’s 110th year of business, this small batch lovely owns up to its name. Handcrafted in the Dominican Republic, the “Axe” is as full-bodied as they come. Thick, oily, chocolaty-brown Dominican wrappers abound a ravishing blend of rich, potent Dominican tobaccos. This blend is literally loaded with Ligero. Tasting notes include earth, spices, cedar, and leather with a sherry finish. Packaged in boutique boxes of 10, these cigars are extremely limited.”

So when I was in Philadelphia this past week I had to pick up a few from their Walnut Street location.. Here is the review:

Cigar: La Flor Dominicana
Size: 5.75 x 46 (Axe/Corona)
Wrapper: Dominican Republic
Binder: Dominican Republic
Filler: Dominican Republic
Strength: Full

Appearance and Construction (17/20): The description from Holts is right on the money. The wrapper has a gorgeous chocolate colored hue to it and a ton of oils. The cigar has a nice amount of tooth it but it has some veins to it and that detracts from the sheer beauty. The cigar has a nice weight to it, a little on the heavy side. There are some significant dimples in the cigar, that I won’t quite call soft spots. The band is the classic LFD design which to me blows away the old design.

Flavor & Notes (29/30): The prelight draw has an amazing well defined molasses that I loved. I took a while to light the cigar which had similar notes on the foot as I took it all in. Upon lighting the stick up the first third had some of those faint notes of molasses but the primary notes here were earth and spices. As we approach the second third there is an underlying notes that is sweet and tangy, that I guess one can equate to sherry or a port. The primary notes are spices, wood and earth. The final third teases you with some molasses notes, however the cigars primary notes are of leather and spice. The sherry finish is 100% noticeable and easily detected. Simply incredible.

Burn/Ash/Draw (24/25): Here is a shock for me anyway. A La Flor Dominicana that had NO burn issues what so ever. I’ve had nothing but bad experiences with LFD and I am sure that is not the case for everyone, but this cigar debunked that myth I had that no LFD burns true. The ash was very strong, albeit it very dark. I ashed a total of 3 times and never once lost the ash without calling for it. The draw was a a little tough, but passable.

Overall (24/25): Those who know me, know I do not like the growing trend of cigars limited to one cigar shop. If this cigar was readily available everywhere I would buy them on a very regular basis. However, even through mail order the price on these cigars are well worth it. One of the best LFDs I have ever smoked and I want more and want them now!
