Thanks to everyone on Twitter, Facebook, and the visitors to this website for taking the time to give me feedback on the new design. Over 90% of the people enjoy the redesign so it will stay. Today’s cigar comes courtesy of Fume Cigars in Montclair, NJ. Outside of the Litto Gomez I will admit I am not a huge fan of the La Flor Dominicana. Every cigar I’ve smoked from them has left me disappointed. While I know many are fans, the cigar just hasn’t done it for me. Lets see if the Habano wrapper changes that up for me…
Cigar: La Flor Dominicana
Size: 5 5/8 x 54 (Perfecto)
Binder: Dominican Republic
Filler: Dominican Republic
Appearance and Construction (19/20): An outstanding looking perfecto that is full of oils. The wrapper of the stick has virtually no veins and the roll is seamless with an exquisite looking cap. The cigar has no soft spots, and is well packed. The cigar features the LFD band which has colors of red, gold and black. The one negative is there is no notation of the cigar being an habano wrapper.
Flavor & Notes (28/30): The cigar has some amazing prelight notes of a spicy molasses. The same notes are on the foot, while the wrapper offers some nice spice. So far so good. Once lit, the cigar offers notes of spices right off the bat. The first third continues with notes of pepper and fig with a touch of raisins. As we enter the second third of the very rich cigar the notes of molasses really begin to shine with a touch of leather in the background. The final third of the smoke has notes of spices and leather on the finish which was a little disappointing compared to the rest of the smoke.
Burn/Ash/Draw (25/25): The best burning cigar I ever had from La Flor Dominicana. The cigar burns even throughout. The amazing white ash is strong with zero flake. It holds for inches at a time, and never fell on its own. The draw was incredible with a slight resistance.
Overall (24/25): This cigar reminds me of an Opus X. The cigar was simply incredible with well defined notes that were easy to identify. One of my favorite cigars to date. I was simply floored by how much the Habano wrapper changed the complexity of this cigar. I highly recommend this stick which I plan to age for a while before smoking in hopes the molasses notes will become even more amplified.
