Cigar Review: CAO Criollo

IMAG0324

The CAO Criollo cigar is the result of years of had work for Nicaraguan tobacco growers to yield a richer, sweeter tobacco. In the beginning the tobacco was met with blue mold until one year the growers got it right. Since then the CAO Criollo was a mainstay of my rotation for many years. Recently I picked up a 5 pack to see if my love for the CAO Criollo was still present and this is the review that answers that question.

Cigar Review: De La Concha House Cigar

De La Concha

Someone once asked me how I get so much information on a particular cigar. Well the answer to that is I tend to read a lot on-line about various products and I try to retain as much information as I can. The other important thing is to talk to shop owners and sales reps in the business. The are a vast knowledge of information.

Today’s cigar I just found out about earlier this week when it was mentioned by the Manager of De La Concha, Ron Melendi over on twitter.

This week I am really unsure what to write about as I had a long day yesterday that has left my brain feeling like mush. It started off witht he NYC Cigar Tweet Up over at Nat Sherman which turned out to be an enjoyable afternoon of connecting with old friends. The middle of the day had a bunch of us going out for dinner at Virgil’s in NYC and was concluded over at Cigar Inn. I left my house at 10am and did not arrive home until 2am.

Back on March 12th, 2010 I posted the press release on the La Aurora 107 and I have to admit it piqued my interest. While not a huge fan of the Preferidos I have enjoyed cigars that carry he La Aurora name. So needless to say I was happy when Miami Cigar Company sent along a few samples for review.

The cigar, named La Aurora 107 in honour of the company’s 107 years in business, will be released in a series of steps, commencing 1 April.

Cigar Review: Tatuaje L’esprit de La Verite

verite08label

Recently I got to hang out with Pete Johnson at a couple of locations in New York and Philadelphia. While at Holt’s I was able to obtain a robusto of the Tatuahe L’espirit de La Vertie 2008. The cigar was part of a bonus in the purchase of a box of the new El Triunfador. Despite Tatuaje prices being a bit on the high end when it comes to prices, this cigar will raise the bar. It is expected to retail between $15.00 and $25.00 depending on the size.

The L’esprit de La Verite which translates to “The Spirit of the Truth” will be released yearly with a different blend of tobaccos from one farm and one crop.

Cigar: Tatuaje L’esprit de La Verite
Size: 5 x 50 (Robusto)

Cigar Review: Berger & Argenti Clasico

bergerargenticloseup

According to Enrique Berger the idea of a fuller bodied Cubanesque style cigar was something he and the Argenti brothers (Al & Michael) discussed for a number of years. The key for them was to create a cigar that would have craftsmanship and great tobacco at an affordable price. They claim that this is that cigar. The cigar is aged with exceptional tobaccos that are both robust and complex.

Cigar: Berger & Argenti Clasico
Size: 5.75 x 50 (Belicoso)
Wrapper: Ecuadorian ‘Desflorado’ Connecticut
Binder: Nicaragua

Cigar Review: Litto Gomez Diez Chisel

IMAG0248

According to the La Flor Dominicana website, “In 1999, We challenged ourselves to produce a cigar that was made entirely with tobacco grown on our farm. We knew it was a difficult task, because it implied growing our own wrapper. The investment was big and the risk too. But the most difficult part was the waiting. The process of fermentation and aging took more years than we expected. We tested this blend month after month for three years. Just to be disappointed because it was not ready but at the same time happy because we would taste the progress. Finally the waiting is over, today we can celebrate this great achievement. The flavor and complexity of the LG’s are everything that we anticipated. We hope you enjoy these great cigars.”

I’ve smoked quite a few of these cigars over time, but the one I am using as my review was gifted to me by the owner of Fume Cigars in Montclair, NJ.

I wanted to talk today about darker cigars in general. The opinions I express are my own and I know some of you will share them and some of you will not. It seems to me that the cigars coming out lately that have a maduro appearance are in a war. The war is who can make the strongest cigar. While I expect certain wrappers to be stronger then others I long for the days when a maduro meant the cigar have a certain sweetness. The obsession lately with the use of ligero tobacco has become disappointing to me as a cigar smoker. Some of these cigars are just about the strength and not about the taste and to me that is a sad thing. I realize that there are people especially in the American market who want a cigar that is super strong but I long for the days of the classic maduro.

And of course The Sunday Links!

Saturday Night Special Version 1.0

saturday-night-lg copy

I get so many emails each week about various cigar shops having a sale I thought it would be cool to share them here. I decided to do the first ever inaugural Saturday Night Special with some specials that friends are running. While most of these people I know via twitter I have had the good fortune to meet a couple of them. The next one won’t be for at least a month after I get some feed back from the participants.

So read the rest of this posting and see what they have to offer!

Press Release: La Aurora 107

107 box

Santiago, DR…12 March 2010…As with their very successful Preferidos, Cien Años and 1495, La Aurora has taken their time in the next step in their 107 year history as Dominican’s oldest cigar maker.

“We had defined our goal early on,” said Guillermo Leon, La Aurora VP, “and that was to bring the smokers a medium bodied, richly flavoured smoke with a fair amount of spice – at a very attractive price.”

Using Dominican, Nicaraguan and Ecuadorian tobaccos, the blending process went through dozens of iterations before achieving a cigar that brings a balanced flavour that is peppery, sweet and provides toasty notes.
