Sunday Rant & Links

I woke up this morning and I saw a discussion on social media that got under my skin. So I lit up a Fuente Anejo in an attempt to relax some before my rant, but you know what it doesn’t really matter. It seems the debate on whether or not to use numbers in a cigar review was up for discussion last night. It really amazes me that as acigarsmoker.com approaches it’s 3rd anniversary that the use of a numerical rating is still debated. If you do not like them, do not use them. It’s a simple as that. It amazes that 3 years later this is still a topic of conversation. There is so much more at stake here then how we score cigars. Even when I tried to stir up discussion about the creation of a CBA, Cigar Bloggers Association the inability to keep things simple prevents it from happening. But alas, I am getting off topic. I just don’t get what the big deal about the use of a numerical rating is. But it seems some people think they have a PhD when it comes to this less then scientific craft and there other issues at hand that are of greater importance then if we use a score to rate out cigars.

I give kudos to Stephen Boyajian over at TheCigarNetwork for getting many bloggers together to write for his new magazine. In fact if you want to subscribe to his magazine which offers the perspective of every day cigar smokers like you and me, subscribe to it today. And as an added bonus if you put in the code acigarsmoker at checkout you can save 15% on the subscription cost.

Over the last few weeks there has been some sites popping up that are consider cigarporn by smokers. Sites like cigarporn.com and cigarphoto.net have nothing on CigarVixens.com where cigar smoking and pornography truly come together. I recently got to speak with Max who has been smoking for 30 years and he was able to put together his love of women, cigars, and photography into one site.

With regard to the recent discussion on Twitter…at least might be the spark for some interesting debate during the trip down to the DR! ;)

As a blogger doing this for 5 years (your 3 years ain’t got nothing on me LOL). The thing I don’t like about numbers, for me, is thats all people will remember of a review will be how you rated it. What is the incentive to actually read the review if all I have to do is look to the right and see you gave the La Riqueza a 91. I’m not going to click on it. The 91 rating tells me you liked it. So it puts the focus on the rating and not on the content.

As a reader, ratings come in handy so I don’t have to read lines and lines of text.

With all my typos and grammatical errors do you really want to read the whole review?

I’ve opted not to put a numerical rating on my assessments of cigars. However, i don’t fault those who do put the numerical rating. My feeling is there are guys that can put a numerical rating better than me. The other reason is come year end, I didn’t want to be asked the question “why didn’t you have the stick you rated a 95 as your number 1 stick?” Again, no fault on who does that – it’s a personal decision. I think there is room for numerical and non-numerical ratings.

First, you guys do a great job and I look foward to reading what you have to say. Second, the numbered ratings actually don’t mean all that much to me. What I look for in a review is the flavor profile. I know what I’m looking for and go by that. For instance, if the review says, dark roast coffee, rich chocolate, that sort of thing. It’s right up my alley. Where as, papery, woody, etc. I stay away. How someone reaches a numericle rating is subjective, obviously. But flavor profile is more to the point. Thanks, and stay with it.

Ratings, numerical, alphabetical, sheep, whatever, are pretty useless as far as I’m concerned. Sure there are objective characteristics that can be measured like construction and burn, but flavor is subjective and can be effected by too many variables. I’ve been on medication that made everything taste metallic, for instance. I avoid doing anything but the most basic “reviews” myself for this reason, as well as the fact that just about anyone can do a better job of describing what they taste in a cigar. I am interested in the idea of a bloggers association though…

I figure this is your site. If you want to use number ratings, by all means do so. If we don’t like it, no one forces us to come here.

I don’t care for number ratings, but I still visit here very often. You still summarize and describe your experience, AND add a numerical rating. So I tend to focus on your description instead of the rating.

Just do what you do. It is clearly a successful recipe considering the popularity of acigarsmoker.com.

    Barry,
Thanks for shout-out ! Clearly CigarVixens took the word cigar porn literally, in a good way :) Not something I’m interested in when it comes to cigarphoto.net mission statement but hey, whatever rocks their boat.

Keep up the good work and continue to do what you believe in. You have around the block for a while. Obviously something works !
