So Special, So Unique, So Select, It’s Epic, MONTECRISTO EPIC! That is the tag line Atladis USA is using for their new Montecristo Boutique line, the Montecristo Epic Premium Selection 07. I was lucky enough to be sent a sample of the Montecristo Epic Toro, so today I am going to be reviewing the Montecristo Epic! According to Altadis this is what makes the new Montecristo so epic:
The task of creating Montecristo Epic was assigned to a special team of our most skilled and accomplished cigar makers – Grupo de Maestros – artisans with centuries of combined experience. It is a true handmade luxury, a masterpiece of complexity and full-bodied smoking pleasure made of the finest aged tobaccos – Vintage 2007.
Every step of the process, from hand selecting the ultra-premium tobaccos to each cigar’s flawless construction is performed with meticulous attention to detail and obsessive devotion. Each cigar is hand inspected and every box includes a certificate of authenticity signed by the artisans at every step. That’s what makes the cigar Montecristo. That’s what it makes it Epic.

Construction and Appearance: The Montecristo Epic has a very attractive and quite beautiful wrapper which is a medium brown with a reddish hue to it. The wrapper has plenty of oil and some moderate veins to it. The upper band is a classic Montecristo band, the second lower band says EPIC in gold on yellow with premium selection 07 below it.
Flavor and Notes: The wrapper of the Montecristo Epic has notes of cocoa, coffee, spice, and wood. The foot has a smilier scent, with notes of spice, cocoa, coffee, and a slight floral undertone. I go with a straight cut to prepare smoking the Montecristo Epic, and the cold draw produces a mix of spice, cocoa, wood, and cream.
Smoking Characteristics: The Montecristo Epic starts out with flavors of rich cocoa, espresso, and undertones of spice, wood, earth, and cream. The draw is perfect easily producing a full body of rich, cool, creamy smoke. The smoke has this undertone of salty sweetness to it, making it very savory and rich. Smoke just billows out of the stick between draws, filling the air around me with its wonderful aroma. The ash holds firm and the burn line is razor sharp.
Into the second third the flavor remains fairly consistent, but intensifies. The rich notes of cocoa, espresso, and cream play wonderfully together, an excellent blend. The undertones of wood, spice, and earth add a rich complexity to the cigar. The draw and burn remain perfect. Each puff easily produces a full body of the rich, cool, creamy smoke. The ash still remains very tight, easily holding to the inch point.
During the final third, the strength creeps up on me a bit. Before this I would have called the cigar dead medium, but during this third it seems to have moved into the medium to full range. This third also has the most significant flavor as the spice fades from the profile. Although it hasn’t evolved in any way, the flavors intensify, blending together in a very satisfying way.
Conclusion: The Montecristo Epic certainly lives up to its name. The flavors are so well blended, rich, and savory it is hard to express how delicious the flavors in this cigar are. On top of that, the draw and burn both required no attention at any point, performing wonderfully. Since this is going to be a limited run, I’d say don’t wait, buy a box as soon as you can, you won’t regret it, its epic.
