Ortega Serie D Natural No. 8 – Cigar Review

print

The Ortega Serie D Natural is the second line from the Ortega Cigar Company. Eddie Ortega formed Ortega Cigars in January of 2012. The company has taken off fast and the Ortega Serie D maduro was met with raving reviews from cigar smokers around the world. Eddie is one of the more active people on twitter and Facebook and very engaged with his customers. I can honestly say, there is not one thing I’ve posted about him that was replied to by him personally. He also is very active on cigar blogs, almost always replying to every review of his products. It was through Eddie’s hard work that the brand is taking off so well, and it has not gone unnoticed.

Construction and Appearance: The Ortega Serie D Natural No. 8 has an attractive medium brown wrapper with small veins and a tight cap. It is a beautiful box pressed cigar which feels great in hand. It has the same band as the maduro version of the cigar, which is simple, yet appealing.

Flavor and Notes: Ortega Serie D Natural No. 8 the wrapper has a sweet creamy scent with notes of hay and nuts. The foot has notes of spice, pepper, hay, and tingles the nose slightly. I go with a V-Cut to prepare for smoking and on the cold draw there is a blend of deep rich spices, earth, and grass.

Smoking Experience: The Ortega Serie D Natural No. 8 starts out with a great draw and a very full body of rich, creamy, smooth, cool smoke. There are notes of pepper, spice, almond, and a mild coffee and cocoa flavor which act as undertones. The flavor is lightly sweet, well blended, and fairly complex. The draw is excellent, easily producing a full body of smoke with each puff. The ash easily holds firm.

Into the second third, the flavor becomes a bit richer, the almond develops more fully and becomes a lot sweeter. The Ortega Serie D Natural No. 8 is a very creamy with notes of coffee, cocoa, and spice. The spice and pepper hold on only as very mild undertones and play nicely with the palate. The profile of the smoke is creamy, smooth, and very sweet with a nice complexity. The burn, which was lightly uneven, has evened out in this third and become fairly sharp. The strength is just slightly over the medium range.

During the final third, the flavor is still very rich and bold, yet not much changes. The smoke is cool, rich, creamy, and full in body. The ash holds firm to the end of the stick without flaking. The draw remains excellent and the stick is noticeably cool to the touch, even as I smoke to the band. The burn is razor sharp and perfectly even. It smokes cool and delicious to the nub, finishing medium range of strength.

Conclusion: At its price point, the Ortega Serie D Natural No. 8 is certainly a real steal. It is rich, creamy, smooth, delicious, and has a nice complexity as well. The construction is more than ample, not requiring any attention to the burn or draw. The flavor is certainly delicious, a fantastic blend that I would expect to find in a much more expensive stick. Not only would I recommend this cigar, I would recommend making a box purchase without a doubt.
