Construction and Appearance: The Macanudo Gold Label Gold Bar comes in a cedar coffin that is wrapper in a type of foil paper giving it basically the look of a gold bar. Once you unwrap this gold foil and open the cedar coffin you can see it has been designed to automatically elevate the Macanudo Gold Label Gold Bar out of the coffin, a pretty neat feature. The first band is the classic Macanudo Cafe band, the second designates it as a Gold Label. The wrapper of the Macanudo Gold Label Gold Bar is very attractive, a beautiful light golden brown with almost no veins, a light oil, and silky smooth to the touch.
Flavor and Notes: The wrapper of the Macanudo Gold Label Gold Bar has the scent of sweet hay, nuts, and a sort of light coffee scent close to a blonde roast. The foot has the scent of hay, coffee, and some light nutmeg. I go with a V-Cut to prepare smoking the Macanudo Gold Label Gold Bar and on the cold draw there is a blend of nutmeg, hay, and nuts.
Smoking Characteristics: Firing up the Macanudo Gold Label Gold Bar I’m met with initial bit of light pepper, nutmeg, and grass. The pepper quickly fades and is replaced with the classic mild and creamy flavor which is typical of the Macanudo Cafe. There are notes of nuts, sweet hay, a very light cocoa, and a bit of a spice close to nutmeg. The flavors are mild, yet delicious, creamy, smooth, and cool. The ash holds very firm. In fact, at one point when I went to ash the Macanudo Gold Label Gold Bar, it took quite a bit of effort to get it to break off. The burn line is nearly razor-sharp, and the draw is ample, providing a medium body of smoke.
During the second third, the flavors of the Macanudo Gold Label Gold Bar remain consistent. All the notes of nuts, sweet hay, light cocoa, and nutmeg remain, creating a pleasant mild, consistent blend. The draw is still excellent, easily providing a medium body of rich, cool, sweet, creamy, smooth, smoke. The burn sharpens up a bit and becomes razor sharp. The ash still easily holds firm past the inch point and has a nice salt and pepper color.
Not much evolution occurs in the final third of the Macanudo Gold Label Gold Bar either. The flavors of nuts, sweet hay, light cocoa, and nutmeg all remain. The Macanudo Gold Label Gold Bar smokes cool all the way to the nub without pulling any heat. The construction performs wonderfully all the way to the end. The burn was excellent, remaining razor sharp. The ash holds firm, and the draw remains even.
Conclusion: The Macanudo Gold Label Gold Bar is the perfect cigar for a new smoker, or one looking to step up for the typical Macanudo Cafe. Its flavor is a bit richer, and a little more complex than the average Macanudo Cafe. Yet, when smoking the Macanudo Gold Label Gold Bar, you can still expect the same consistent, mild, smooth, creamy smoke every time. The Macanudo Gold Label Gold Bar would make the perfect gift for any mild smoker. Hey, it even comes gift wrapped!
