Perdomo 20th Anniversary Maduro Robusto – Cigar Review
It should not be a surprise to the regular readers of A Cigar Smoker’s Journal that I’m a fan of Perdomo. In fact, the Perdomo Champagne Noir is one of my go-to cigars. So when I heard that Perdomo was going to release a 2oth Anniversary Maduro, I have to admit I was quite excited. Luckily, I was able to get a sample of it at the 2012 IPCPR so I could test it out for myself. Here is my review of the Perdomo 20th Anniversary Maduro Robusto.
Also check out some of my photos from the 2012 Perdomo IPCPR booth which was absolutely buzzing with people:
Size: 5 x 56
Wrapper: Cuban Seed Maduro
Strength: Medium to Full
Cigars Smoked For Review: 1
Construction and Appearance: The Perdomo 20th Anniversary Maduro Robusto has a band with the classic Perdomo sunburst logo and 20th Anniversary written below it. The wrapper is a nice dark brown with moderate veins and plenty of oil. It is a slightly rounded box press which feels great in hand. The Perdomo 20th Anniversary Maduro Robusto comes in at a 56 ring gauge making it more like a super robusto of sorts.
Flavor and Notes: The wrapper of the Perdomo 20th Anniversary Maduro Robusto has notes of sweet rich cocoa, coffee, and a touch of hay. The foot has a scent which is a blend of cocoa, earth, coffee, hay, and a light spice. I use a straight cut to prepare smoking the Perdomo 20th Anniversary Maduro Robusto and on the cold draw there are flavors of spice, cocoa, coffee, and earth.
Smoking Characteristics: The Perdomo 20th Anniversary Maduro Robusto opens up with a very easy draw. It is almost too loose, but is providing a very full body of rich, cool, smooth smoke. The flavor in the first third consists of coffee, cocoa, and some moderate spices. There is also a light pepper that fades in and out of the smoking profile in this third. The burn is razor sharp, and the ash holds firmly easily to the inch point.
Into the second third of the Perdomo 20th Anniversary Maduro Robusto, the flavor really develops and the draw evens out. The flavor is still a blend of cocoa, coffee, and a very slight spice. The blend is fantastic and much sweeter now, very enjoyable. The draw is fantastic, easily providing a full body of creamy, sweet, smooth, rich, delicious smoke. The strength in in the medium to full range and fits well into the progression of flavor.
During the final third of the Perdomo 20th Anniversary Maduro Robusto, the spice has completely faded out of the flavor profile. Also, a light earthy note has joined the blend and really rounds out the flavor, blending with the notes of cocoa, coffee, and hay. The smoke is still very creamy, smooth, cool, rich, and delicious. The strength remains in the medium to full range and all the construction remains excellent. The Perdomo 20th Anniversary Maduro Robusto smokes cool the nub with all of its rich and delicious flavors.
Conclusion: The Perdomo 20th Anniversary Maduro Robusto has reenforced my love of Perdomo cigars. The blend was very rich, delicious, and balanced, offering a wonderful aroma, a great profile, and fantastic construction. At no point was attention required for the draw, burn, or ash. Is it a box worthy cigar? Without a doubt. Anyone who loves full flavored, full bodied maduros will quickly fall in love with the Perdomo 20th Anniversary Maduro.
