Romeo y Julieta Cabinet Selección Figurado – Cigar Review

print

Romeo y Julieta is one of the best known names and one of the best selling brands of cigars. I can name over 10 different lines of Romeo Y Julieta off of the top of my head, yet there’s still a few I haven’t tried. The Cabinet Seleccion is one of them, and with my interest in it sparked, I decided to do a little research on it to find out about it. A google search yielded less results than I had hoped, I found the Altadis (the maker of the Dominican Romeo y Julieta) page about the cigar, but not much else from third party sites. The Romeo Y Julieta Cabinet Seleccion is made in the Dominican Republic and features a rare vintage Cameroon wrapper, a Nicaraguan binder, and a mix of Dominican, Nicaraguan, and Peruvian filler which gives the cigar a “complexity and finesse that embodies the perfect cigar” according to Altadis USA.

Construction and Appearance: The band of Romeo y Julieta Cabinet Selección is similar to the classic Romeo Y Julieta band except it is in a white and gold theme rather than a red and gold theme and says Cabinet Selección below it. The wrapper of the Romeo y Julieta Cabinet Selección is a medium brown with fine veins and a very rich oil to it. It is very solid in hand and features wonderful craftsmanship, with a very seamless cap and closed foot.

Flavor and Notes: The wrapper of the Romeo y Julieta Cabinet Selección has a very clean deep grassy scent. Since the Romeo y Julieta Cabinet Selección I chose for review was a figurado it has a closed foot, and the foot smells exactly the same as the wrapper. I use a straight cut to prepare smoking the Romeo y Julieta Cabinet Selección and on the cold draw there is almost no air flow due to the closed foot, but there are the flavors of spice and grass.

Smoking Characteristics: The Romeo y Julieta Cabinet Selección opens up with a very tight draw due to the closed foot, so the initial flavors are a bit subdued. There are notes of grass, nuts, cocoa, and some nice exotic spices. The draw remains a bit tight during the entire first third since it is tapered towards the foot, but it opens up quite a bit and the smoke is clean, smooth, creamy, and very rich. The strength in this third is medium with a nice rich retrohale. Each draw leaves a little spice and grass on the palate which provides a nice rich finish.

Into the second third of the Romeo y Julieta Cabinet Selección, the draw finally opens up and becomes nice and full. Suddenly the flavors snap into full effect and pop to life becoming very intense and rich. The notes of exotic spices and grass really kicks up and blend well with the notes of cocoa and nuts. The smoke becomes much richer, smoother, fuller, creamier and is now nice and cool. The flavors are all well balanced, blended, and very delicious. Between each draw, the finish is very consistent, but much like the flavor of the smoke, it continues to intensify. The burn is absolutely perfect with the ash holding firm, well past the inch point. The strength has increased into the medium to full range, with a nice mellow buzz setting in.

During the final third of the Romeo y Julieta Cabinet Selección, there are no new additions of flavor, just a slight shift in dominance in the smoking profile. The spice becomes a bit more subdued and the grassy flavor picks up a bit along with the nutty profile and the notes of cocoa. The blend is very enjoyable, rich, and lightly complex. The construction still performs well to the finish with a razor sharp burn and a very firm ash.

Conclusion: The Romeo y Julieta Cabinet Selección was certainly an excellent smoke, but I think I may have chosen the wrong size for myself. I was expecting a bit more of an evolution which is very important to me, but since the figurado had a closed foot it took a little while for the flavors to fire up and kick in. That being said, the flavors were very delicious and well balanced with a wonderful aroma which garnered a few compliments from those around me. The strength was excellent, coming in at a nice medium to full which is a real sweet point among smokers. Overall this is an excellent stick that you should grab if you can find one.
