Cigar Review: Camacho Ecuador

print

Back in Mid-May acigarsmoker.com was one of the first to break news about the all new Camacho Ecuador. Today we are one of the first websites to offer a review on the same cigar.

According to the original story, “The Ecuador Habano leaf is one of the most storied tobaccos in our arsenal, a wrapper unique unto itself in color, texture and aroma. Grown in the rugged and nitrogen rich soils beneath the towering Andes Mountains, a majestic region where tobacco growing first took hold thousands of years ago. Ecuador Habano is one of the most versatile wrapper leaves in existence, opening the possibilities for our master blenders to experiment and drive the boundaries of flavor to new heights.”

The tobacco uses some of my favorite components, Mata Fina from Brazil and Pelo de Oro from Dominican Republic so I am looking forward to smoking this cigar.

Cigar: Camacho Ecuador
Size: Robusto (5 x 50)
Wrapper: Ecuador Habano
Binder: Brazil Mata Fina
Filler: Honduras, Dominican Republic (Pelo de Oro)
Strength: Medium
Number Smoked: 3

Appearance & Construction: First off, the band of the Camacho Ecuador is gorgeous as it utilizes my favorite color, teal. I question the use of the word Infamous Since 1962, that would mean that they are famous for bad reasons. So it makes me scratch my head. Under the vertical Comacho is the word Ecuador and the scorpion logo. The band comes together perfectly in the back triangular shape. What this means is that they had to order different size bands for each size in the line. The Habano wrapper is glistening with oils in a seamless roll. There is a lot of tiny veins in the infrastructure of the Ecuador Habano wrapper and a fair amount of tooth. The cigar is firm to the touch with a nice weight in the hand.

Flavor & Notes: Having the cigar sitting above my keyboard as I write the introduction I could smell the delightful aroma of the cigar wafting up towards me. The nose of the wrapper reminds me of an old fashion creme soda, while the foot had a traditional tobacco aroma with a touch of molasses. The cold draw of the cigar had some oak and molasses. At first light there was some bitterness that quickly changed to saltiness.

As we work into the first third of the cigar there are some hearty wood notes mixed with a well defined coffee. There is a nice amount of spice present as well, especially through the nose. The twangy notes that is synonymous with Ecuador tobacco is present as well.

In the second third of the smoke you become aware of the distinct flavor of Pelo de Oro, albeit rather faintly. The tobacco has a distinct flavor and disappears rather quickly. There is also a sweetness that begins to develop and the spice through the nose begins to mellow out. The primary note remains woody and some ginger shows up on the transition.

In the last third of the cigar the Pelo de Oro really begins to shine and a raisin like note begins to take hold of the cigar with some continued wood and coffee. Like most Ecuador cigars, the finish is long and dry.

Smoking Characteristics:  At first light I was surprised how quickly the cigar lit from toasting it with a single flame lighter, even without taking my first pull it was combusting rather nicely. The burn line of the cigar is a little bit off, but not terrible as it needed no touch up. The light color ash holds 1/4 of the cigar at a time though it is a little flaky.

Conclusion: Tobacco of an Ecuador origin for me can be so incredibly frustrating. If your not properly hydrated the dryness that smoking this tobacco can creep up on you and alter the smoking experience. While I am not one to always pair cigars there are some that hit me as being an ideal match. For the Camacho Ecuador I believe it would go nicely with a Belgian beer such as Blue Moon. In my first few cigars smoked the Pelo de Oro felt a little lost in the in the blend but in the final one smoked for review it shined in the last third of the cigar.
