Weekend Smokes Vol. 5

ACS_logo

Little pressed for time today, so the update will be brief. i got the proof of the article I wrote for Cigar.ch in Switzerland this week and I am impressed with how it came out. Major thanks go out to Jon Huber, Pete Johnson and IPCPR all who took the time to give me quotes for the article. Once again a special thanks to Stogie Review for their help with the photographs as they were in Vegas.

Leaving to Santa Fe this week to visit some friends but I’m trying to get some reviews written in time before I leave..

Smoked a little light this week in preparation for the the 40 cigars I plan to smoke in New Mexico.

As I write this Hurricane Irene is working its way up the coast after making landfall in North Carolina. Many of my friends who have gone through a Hurricane before have been worrying about me and many here on the east coast. Personally, I think it won’t be as bad as expected. Sure there will be some flooding in lower Manhattan and a lot of beach erosion, but the last 24 hours saw the storm go from a strong catagory 2 to a weakening category 1. Having lived through many Nor’easters that brought a massive amount of snow, I am not worried. 15 Hours of rain, a lot of wind and it will all be over. It could of been a lot worse.

Last week we reviewed…

I can’t believe the summer is almost over, where did it go? It seems as if the older you get the faster time moves and that makes me reflect on words spoken by Ferris Bueller, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop to look around once in a while, it may pass you by“. Which in turn makes me think about Mia Sara who played Ferris’ girlfriend in the movie. She was pretty hot and a decent actress but she seemed to disappear into obscurity.

In other news we landed a job…

Weekend Smokes August 1-7, 2011

Over the past month or two, the guys over at Stogie Review began posting what they call “The Week In Smoke” which I thought was pretty cool. I reached out to Jerry Cruz and asked him if he would mind if I did something along those lines here at acigarsmoker.com. Jerry who has become a good friend responded, “not at all…I’m sure we stole it from someplace else. LOL” Lets face it, there aren’t to many original ideas out there, and it gets kind of tiresome typing out reviews and links. I know the Sunday Links was popular for a while, but come the weekend between my full time job and this site, I really didn’t want to sit at the keyboard and write something up like I am doing now.

Sunday Links

Father’s Day. A day to spend with dad either in person or in spirit. Today I reflect back on the days I spent with my dad when he was still alive. I remember the times we played catch in the park. I remember the day he wore shorts to a baseball game in September when [...]

With IPCPR right around the corner I haven’t officially decided on going or not going. Originally, I was not going to go because of rediculous airline prices of 685.00 round trip I couldn’t justify the trip which would of cost close to 2K when it was over and done with. Call me frugal if you want, but for a week of cigars that is a little to expensive. I rather use that money to go to Pro Cigar. However, I have a travel agent friend trying to find me a deal and I hope to have an official decision this week. Regardless, my check is in the mail to IPCPR where I will become a member. While the blogger community might be split, I am happy they came to an agreement that makes retailers and bloggers happy, for the most part.

It’s been too long since I did a Sunday Links. I remember I used to make fun of friends who said they needed the days to have an extra 2-3 hours in them in order to get things done. I would break their chops about the lack of organization and ability to schedule. Well, I am eating crow. The last couple of months I have struggled to get things done as planned, and as a result I had to drop the Sunday links for a bit.

So without further adieu, The Sunday Links:

Easter Sunday Links

Easter Sunday is a day to reflect on religion, enjoy time spent with friends and family as well as smoking a cigar if you are lucky enough to get one in. For me this takes on a whole new meaning as I converted to the Catholic religion many years ago. Growing up in a Jewish family that was relaxed in its beliefs I went to Hebrew school to learn about the religion and to have a Bar Mitzvah. However, that was a path I never wound up going down. Perhaps it was due to an abusive teacher or the language but I asked to not go through with it and my parents reluctantly agreed…

Social Media is a powerful tool, but it is one that is easily abused due to the “muscles” one tends to develop behind the computer. Such is the case with people on Twitter and Facebook. It’s sad when a person doesn’t see the harm they are doing to a community when they decide to question support of a product or cause in a public forum. The same can be said when a person hides behind multiple accounts taking shots at people because of their own social inadequacies. At the end of the day we need to support one another because of strength in numbers, especially with growing legislation against us. I know some people rather stir the pot but at the end of the day does it really do anything to help the community?

So this past week was an eclectic mix of weather, with snow on Thursday and 62 degrees and sunny today, Sunday. Hopefully spring is here to stay, and as I look at the five day forecast, I see upper 50s and low 60s for NYC. This is the perfect time of year to visit your local Brick & Mortar and stock up on cigars. In fact if you live near Garden City, Long Island take a ride out to Tobacco Plaza for the March Madness final, get deals on Alec Bradley, and enjoy some good food and great company. Tobacco Plaza is located at, 218 Lakeville Road, Great Neck, NY 11020. As of now I plan to be there as well so I look forward to seeing you!

After a brief hiatus last weekend as we began our journey home from the Dominican Republic we are back with the Sunday Links. This whole week I found myself daydreaming of good times that were had and new friendships that were made. I went from 85 degrees and sunny to 35 degrees and raw. April is right around the corner and the best day of the year happened while I was out of town. I can’t wait for spring to fully hit it’s stride.

As we get closer to IPCPR some things are being discussed and travel arrangements are being made. So far I am looking forward to the new lines from Tatuaje the most with the La Aurora 107 Maduro a close second. Also very curious about the cigar coming out from Jon Huber the former director of lifestyles and marketing for CAO. The Crowned Heads should be a winner based on Jons connections in the industry.

You know winter is coming to an end when Spring Training begins in Florida and Arizona. Sure we all love our winter sports like football and hockey, but nothing beats the nightly ball game and a cigar with your favorite adult beverage. As a Yankees fan this spring is a little different then the past. We knew who our 5 starters were, who was going to make up the bullpen and the only position up for grabs was utility infielder. This year as a fan of the Bronx Bombers things are a little different. Who will be the backup catcher, who will fill out 4 and 5 in the rotation and who will win the 4th OF slot as well as the utility infielder. It’s that time of the year to make predictions so here we go.

Sunday Rant & Links

ACS_logo

I woke up this morning and I saw a discussion on social media that got under my skin. So I lit up a Fuente Anejo in an attempt to relax some before my rant, but you know what it doesn’t really matter. It seems the debate on whether or not to use numbers in a cigar review was up for discussion last night. It really amazes me that as acigarsmoker.com approaches it’s 3rd anniversary that the use of a numerical rating is still debated. If you do not like them, do not use them. It’s a simple as that. It amazes that 3 years later this is still a topic of conversation.

I just read up on Saint Valentine on the web, and there is nothing to suggest that this martyr of the Catholic church has anything to do with the traditions of modern Valentine’s Day. The feast of St. Valentine first occurred in the year, 496 and it was established by Pope Gelasius I. In fact no one really is sure who Saint Valentine was as he appeared in various martyologies. Throughout history he has been described as a priest in Rome, a bishop or priest in Interamna or a Martyr in the Roman province of Africa. Knowing that what I am about to say isn’t sacrilegious makes me feel more comfortable knowing that God will not strike me down for this view, but I will probably further secure my seat in hell. For me, I picture hell as being a room full of excellent cigars but not having anything to light them with.
