Sunday Links

I wanted to talk today about darker cigars in general. The opinions I express are my own and I know some of you will share them and some of you will not. It seems to me that the cigars coming out lately that have a maduro appearance are in a war. The war is who can make the strongest cigar. While I expect certain wrappers to be stronger then others I long for the days when a maduro meant the cigar have a certain sweetness. The obsession lately with the use of ligero tobacco has become disappointing to me as a cigar smoker. Some of these cigars are just about the strength and not about the taste and to me that is a sad thing. I realize that there are people especially in the American market who want a cigar that is super strong but I long for the days of the classic maduro.

And of course The Sunday Links!

Saturday Night Special Version 1.0

I get so many emails each week about various cigar shops having a sale I thought it would be cool to share them here. I decided to do the first ever inaugural Saturday Night Special with some specials that friends are running. While most of these people I know via twitter I have had the good fortune to meet a couple of them. The next one won't be for at least a month after I get some feed back from the participants.

So read the rest of this posting and see what they have to offer!

Press Release: La Aurora 107

Santiago, DR…12 March 2010…As with their very successful Preferidos, Cien Años and 1495, La Aurora has taken their time in the next step in their 107 year history as Dominican’s oldest cigar maker.

“We had defined our goal early on,” said Guillermo Leon, La Aurora VP, “and that was to bring the smokers a medium bodied, richly flavoured smoke with a fair amount of spice – at a very attractive price.”

Using Dominican, Nicaraguan and Ecuadorian tobaccos, the blending process went through dozens of iterations before achieving a cigar that brings a balanced flavour that is peppery, sweet and provides toasty notes.

Cigar Review: La Flor Dominicana Air Bender

The La Flor Domincana Air Bender is the latest release from Litto Gomez and it comes in four sizes. I hear the name is a tribute to Litto's passion for Kung Fu but I have not been able to confirm that. It is also the first full release to use the Ecuadorian Habano wrapper that graced the limited edition Salomon.

The four sizes that this cigar will be released in are the Matatan (5 × 50), Guerrero (6.25 × 54), Maestro (5.5 × 52) and the Valiente (6.25 × 60). The price of this cigar rangers from #7.00 to $8.50 before local takes. La Flor Dominicana calls these cigars "intense, sophisticated and powerful".

Cigar Review: Nestor Miranda Dominicano Rosado

We would like to thank Miami Cigar Company for sending some samples of these new smokes prior to their release dates so we can share our findings. This is a risky move because despite Miami Cigar Co. being one of our sponsors we will not hide our feelings when it comes to reviews. I personally rather risk losing a sponsor then some readers over an unfair biased review. We promise to remain objective on all cigars no matter how we obtain them. I take great pride in my honesty and straight forward nature and I am not about to change who I am for any reason. A rating cannot and will not ever be bought.

Cigar Review: illusione ~mk~

Last week I got to hang out at De La Concha in New York City with some friends and I picked up a few sticks for review. Some of those sticks were the illusione mk which is also known as the Teaching Machine. For fans of the line, the first thing you notice is the band being gold and white like the ECCJ instead of the usual black and white. This is where Twitter is handy as Dion Giolito is on there and when asked why the difference in color he stated, "It was a slightly different blend than the illusione B&W bands. Needed more tooling/attention due to the smaller ring, hence different band."

So then how does the illusione mk rate? There is only one way to find out come on inside and read more...
