La Palina El Diario – Cigar Review

La Palina - El Diario - Band

I first found out about the resurrection of the La Palina brand from Gary Arzt and I was intrigued giving the history of the brand. We attended the launch event, loved the Pasha and were looking forward to the release of the El Diario. That time is here, and I had the chance to meet up with Bill Paley, owner of La Palina about 2 months ago at Cigar Inn in New York City. At the time we talked about the process of creating another cigar to the line that would hold true to the historical tradition of the brand.

According to La Palina website, Rolled at the Raices Cubanas factory in Honduras for La Palina Cigar, the El Diario is a perfect complement to our acclaimed original line, the Family Series. The La Palina El Diario is a richly flavored medium bodied cigar.

Q & A with Jose Blanco

Jose, thank you for taking the time to teach me more and more about tobacco everytime we meet. As a fellow Yankee fan we share a common bond that is only surpassed by our love of cigars. I look toward the time when we can sit back and enjoy a cigar together.

News recently rocked the cigar world that Jose Blanco was stepping down from his position at La Aurora and retiring. Now that the dust has settled we got to catch up with Jose Blanco who is currently enjoying himself on a European vacation. During our brief conversation, one can read between the lines and say he left the door open a bit for a return to the cigar industry and this might not be the end of his career.

Alec Bradley Tempus Creo (Lancero) – Cigar Review

TempusBand

I probably smoke a lot more Alec Bradley cigars because of who the local sales rep is (Barry Blonder). They make good cigars, but I wouldn’t describe myself as a die-hard fan. The rep however is such a nice guy, and fun to be around that I find myself drawn to the product to support him more than the brand. While he wasn’t the rep back in the day, my experience with Alec Bradley smokes started on shaky ground. Do you remember the triangular box pressed Trilogy cigar? If s,o you will know what I mean when I say Alec Bradley has come a long way. The Tempus line of cigars moved Alec Bradley into the upper echelon of premium cigar manufacturers, and they continue to build on the success the brand brought them.

According to the Alec Bradley websites…

Cigar Event: A Final Puff In Central Park

Last_herf

So do you have any plans on May 21st, 2011 at 1:00PM? If you’re free, I think you might want to go this event:

You won’t be able to smoke your fine luxury tobacco in public parks and beaches after May 23rd. But before NYC’s oppressive outdoor smoking ban goes into effect cigar companies including Alec Bradley, Graycliff, La Aurora, Altadis, General Cigar and Plasencia invite you to have A Last Cigar In Central Park.

This event is hosted by Aaron Sigmond, the founding editor of Smoke Magazine and the Cigar Report, and television personality Bill McCuddy to commemorate the end of an era as it is one of the last times cigar smokers can legally enjoy a cigar in Central Park.

Event: Michael Herklots Birthday & Charity Fundraiser

The Carnegie Club

For the last six years Michael Herklots has opted to celebrate his birthday differently then many. Instead of making it a day about him, he chooses to give back to the experiences that made him the person he is today. As a graduate of Killingly High School he knows first hand how funding isn’t always there for the students as states struggle to pass budgets that often remove programs. Each year he has put together a stellar fundraiser that makes those in attendance happy to give to the cause.

Alec Bradley American Classic – Pre-Release Review

AB_American_Sample

Due to ship on May 20th, 2010 in boxes of 20, Alec Bradley is set to release its first new cigar with a new logo as part of the band. The American Class Blend comes out as a value priced cigar, but the question remains will it smoke like one, or will it be above and beyond. According to the Alec Bradley release the American Classic is described as, “Mild to medium bodied, this blend of rare aged tobacco has a perfect balance of flavor, complexity and richness. A very smooth cream smoke with notes of cedar and a distinct nutty flavor”.

The cigar will be available as a Corona (5.5 x 42/$3.95); Robusto (5 x 50/$4.50); Toro (50 x 6/$4.75); Churchill (7 x 48/$5.00); Torpedo (6 1/8 x 52/$5.00) and Gordo (6 x 60/$5.50).

Event Recap: New Jersey Cigar Festival

Cigar-Fest-Logo-for-A-Cigar-Smoker-12.22.10

On a beautiful Sunday afternoon, Newark Bears baseball stadium became the field of dreams for cigar smokers. As I lined up with the VIPs in the morning, with my cigar in hand it felt weird to be smoking at a baseball stadium, but at the same time it felt right. As the gates opened, we walked in and were given our VIP bag which was small compared to other events but of higher quality then most… Inside the VIP bag was a humidor, with cigars such as the Avo 85th, Nestor Miranda Danno 2010, Tatuaje Red Label, Alec Bradley Tempus, Martin Family of Cigars, Los Blancos, Reinaldo and Joya De Nicaragua as well as various others.

Once inside the event had more of a…

Cigar Review: Alec Bradley New York

AB-NYcloseup

I write this review sitting in my freezing apartment. About 6 weeks ago my building was sold to new owners who have been far less then generous with the heat. The thermometer on my desk says the room is currently 59 degrees. My fingers are cold and despite wearing socks and shoes so are my toes. I have to wonder if this is some sort of plan of the new owners. It seems prior to them buying the building the old ownership did not rent out new apartments, and at last count there were about 7 empty apartments out of 96. Well once the sale was completed the empty apartments remained and no effort has been made to rent them.

Such is the life in New York. 75% tobacco taxes and having to fight for heat on a 27 degree night

Also in New York City is a scheduled hearing on the outdoor smoking ban that would ban smoking in pedestrian plazas, beaches, and city owned parks. What bothers me the most about this is that once the plan was first announced there has been no sighting of any of the tobacco groups in the mainstream news other then a debate on the local news channel New York 1.

Friday News: IPCPR Version

ipcpr

There are so many updates that I decided to come back a day early. Here are some memories and information about new cigars. The list is long and will continue tomorrow as well.

I guess everyone wants to know how IPCPR and to be honest I found it a little overwhelming even with crowds much lighter then normal. I pretty much took a lot of time to be a spectator and I wandered the floor looking at new products and only taking the time to introduce myself if the person was not busy. After all this is a show for retailers first, press second.

Cigar Review: Old School GR8

gr8label

I remember the first time I saw this cigar on the shelf at a local tobacconist and it caused me to chuckle. GR8 was very junior high and I wasn’t sure of the name to be honest. It seemed corny and gimmicky. I smoked a few and liked them enough to make them a part of my rotation.

A few weeks ago I went to Tobacco Plaza on Long Island which is where Old School cigars started. And if you remember my review from a few weeks ago of the the Old School Original you will recall how I went gaga over them. In fact I liked them so much I headed back out to the shop which is about 25 miles from house just to buy some GR8 cigars to review on this website.
