Press Release: Quesada Q d’etat

printscreen copy

The Q d’etat line represents a symbolic revolt against the unfair taxation practices and mistreatment of the premium cigar industry. The brand is intended to create awareness of the dangers increased government regulation and taxation will produce, specifically the FDA’s desire to regulate premium cigars. There will be three sizes, released at different dates, of 1,000 ten-count boxes. Each box will contain a form to register for membership in Cigar Rights of America. The first of the three sizes is a figurado called the “Molotov” and will be released in January.

Casa Magna Domus Magnus Limitada – Cigar Review

DomusMagnusBand

Due to come out in 10 count boxes sometime near the trade show the Casa Magna Domus Magna is made at Plasencia Cigars in Nicaragua. The cigars are blended by Manuel Quesada and the Plasencia family and is set to be released in two sizes. The Maximus (6.5 x 55/$9.95) and the Optimus (5.75 x 52/$8.95). The cigars are box pressed with a pigtail cap.

According to Quesada, “It’s a totally different blend. The wrapper is a sun-grown Jalapa wrapper, and we have blended for the wrapper. It’s a totally different taste. I would consider them a little stronger and a totally different direction in the taste.” Which leads me to ask why they are releasing them under Casa Magna and not a new limited edition line. Suffice to say there is a few aspects of the cigar industry I just don’t get. I mean if you aren’t a fan of the line you might not try these. If you are a fan of the line, you might not like that they are different.

Event: Michael Herklots Birthday & Charity Fundraiser

The Carnegie Club

For the last six years Michael Herklots has opted to celebrate his birthday differently then many. Instead of making it a day about him, he chooses to give back to the experiences that made him the person he is today. As a graduate of Killingly High School he knows first hand how funding isn’t always there for the students as states struggle to pass budgets that often remove programs. Each year he has put together a stellar fundraiser that makes those in attendance happy to give to the cause.

Casa Magna Colorado Lancero – Cigar Review

casamagnalanceroband

The Casa Magna Colorado Lancero has begun to hit retailers shelves. Unlike traditional lancero cigars the Casa Magna is 3/4 of an inch longer, with a 40 ring gauge instead of 38. According to Manuel Quasada, “In the late 70s thin cigars sold. We sold thousands of them every month. Then all of a sudden, they died.” Last year, the cigar was offered as part of the Emperador Collector’s Box which contained four sizes. The box sets are believed to have sold out from the retailers who had them.

Casa Magna Colorado Lanceros will have a suggested retail price of $12.95 per cigar, and will be packed in boxes of 7 cigars. Why seven? “They look beautiful,” said Quesada, “and it’s a good sale unit.” Seven cigars at that price keeps the total box below $100. Before local tobacco taxes, that is.

Well by this time next week I will be in New Orleans for IPCPR and the Big Easy will never be the same. Tops on my list will be Cafe Du Monde in the morning before the trade show and of course the Twitter Brother Of The Leaf Cocktail Hour where we will be presenting Jerry Cruz with checks that were raised during the JJ4JJ fundraiser.

And now for the Sunday Links which will be on hiatus next weekend.

Sunday Links

The 3 weeks of the Tour De France has just come to an end as I type this and Lance Armstrong has finished 3rd. Not bad, for a guy 37 years of age in a field of competitors much younger then him. Add to the fact that he was 3 years removed from the race [...]

To all your Mothers out there, Happy Mothers Day. It’s an exciting time of the year for Cigar smokers with Cigar Fest just past us and the IPCPR Convention right around the corner. Cigar Review: Casa Magna

One of the hold backs on me not doing reviews is I smoke the cigar, and I don’t have a camera to take the photo, so I upgraded my cell phone to a blackberry curve which has a 2.0 mega-pixel camera on it. Well today I once again did not have my camera on me, [...]
