Cigar Commentary: Where I Buy My Cigars

SuperMarketAisle

A lot of my friends ask me where I buy cigars. I usually tell them that I buy my cigars at the local brick and mortar (my local cigar shop). But that’s only half the truth. I find myself buying a few cigars through online retailers too. Even though in both cases I may be buying cigars, I’m definitely paying for something totally different.

Rodrigo Boutique Blend – Cigar Review

Rodrigo Boutique Blend Band

Almost 2 weeks ago I was sitting in Cigar Inn one night with a couple of friends when I got approached by a gentleman who knew me, but I was a loss for who he was. Turns out it was George Rodriguez. We got to talking and we shot some video but I had an issue with my phone and it got wiped out. We discussed his company but the major of the information can be found on their website, Rodrigo Cigars.

One of the sets of cigars he gave me was the Boutique Blend which is available in 4 sizes. The “G4″ – 6.25 x 50; “G5″ – 5.5 x 56 and the “G6″ – 6 x 60. According to the website,

Press Release: A Tribute to Cigar Inn and Cigar Aficionado Members

Here’s some interesting news. Cigar Inn, the only tobacconist with a Cigar Aficionado branded lounge has commissioned a 320 sq. ft mural of their cigar-smoking customers. On October 20th, Cigar Inn will have an in-store event to unveil the mural.

The event sounds amazing. There’s going to be complementary cigars and hors d’ oeuvres. So if you’re in New York Cityon October 20th, you might want to swing on by for a great event.

Oliva Grand Maduro – Cigar Review

OlivaGrandMaduro_Band

One of the cigar shops I spend a lot of time at is Cigar Inn, located on 2nd avenue between 53rd and 54th Street in New York City. Not only are the 3 brothers that own it great people, but so is the eclectic mix of people who hang out there on a regular basis. The store has a high volume of customers and they tend to order a lot of items. Because of this sometimes, they have to store boxes in their warehouse where they become lost over time only to be found again. Recently they uncovered some original Tony Bahia Gold cigars which I sadly, missed out on. Then a few weeks later they uncovered today’s cigar which I pounced on.

Viaje Skull & Bones WMD – Cigar Review

ViajeSkullWMDBand

I try to keep and open mind when reviewing cigars that do not fit my profile, and every now and then I find what I consider to be a gem with Cro-Magnon. And I will be the first to preface this review by stating the cigar does not fit my profile. But I like to think that I review a cigar fairly based upon the construction, notes, characteristics and more. I do not hate Andre Farkas the brand owner of Viaje and to be honest I only met him for 10 seconds at IPCPR in 2010. With that said and done, I find more of the Viaje cigars to be a miss instead of a hit. I know I am in the minority, as Viaje has a cult following. However, I wonder if the cult following is because of the cigars, or the rarity of them.

Will the Skull & Bones Weapons of Mass Destruction blow me away, or will it be a dud?

In Memoriam: Gary J. Arzt

GJA

Born in February of 1941, Gary J. Arzt has seen more then I could ever imagine before his passing the morning of April 2nd, 2011.

I first met Gary through a series of emails in the winter of 2008/2009. Gary reached out to me to let me know he had been reading my site and enjoyed it very much. We discussed a love of cigars and Gary had told me how manufacturers had begun to take note of me. He helped broker the first ever advertiser I had on this website, and he put me in the eyes of Miami Cigar & Company who I have developed a close personal relationship with over the years. I owe a lot to Gary J. Arzt.

On December 20th, 2010 La Aurora Cigars launched their latest blend which is specific for the New York market called Broadway. The cigar which I reviewed last week was met with much fanfare by those in attendance. Those who smoked the cigar at the event that I got a chance to talk with raved about the cigar.

This past summer the stte of New York passed a 75% OTP tax which has effected the cigar prices tremendously. According Guillermo León…

La Aurora Unveils Broadway Series for New York State only
The Affordable Cigar Debuts Monday December 20 at Cigar Inn.

MIAMI FL – Miami Cigar & Company, the exclusive U-S distributor for La Aurora, announces help is on the way for New York. Tobacconists are suffering under harsh tobacco tax of 75% of wholesale cost which prices many cigars out of the average smoker’s reach. La Aurora vice president Guillermo León says it is time for action to help smokers. As a result, León and Miami Cigar and Company President Nestor Miranda are releasing a special Broadway Series by La Aurora with a suggested retail price of $12.25 including the onerous NY state tobacco tax.

Cigar Review: La Flor Dominicana Air Bender Chisel

airbenderband

So the other night on Twitter I asked what cigar to be reviewed on Monday and which cigar to be ruled today. As luck would have it the Air Bender Chisel was today’s cigar and I got to spend some time last night with Andrew who is Vice President of Sales for La Flor Dominicana and the new northeast sales rep, Peter. We chilled in Cigar Inn on 2nd Avenue smoked some cigars and finished off a bottle of rum. Well at least Andrew and I did since Peter was driving and didn’t want to drink. We kept the conversation light, didn’t really discuss anything blog worthy and shared a bunch of laughs. It was a good time, and had the feel of a couple of friends hanging out to enjoy a smoke.

An Evening with Guillermo Leon

100_0999

Last week while Guillermo Leon was in NYC on vacation he gave me a call to meet up to have a cigar. Little did I know that night would be a trip down memory lane of the first night I was in the Dominican Republic as a guest of the Miami Cigar Co. and La Aurora Cigars. For those who do not know Guillermo Leon is the owner of the La Aurora Cigar Company and one the nicest most genuine people in the business.

Having spent the earlier part of the day at a Jose Blanco cigar seminar I was surprised when Guillermo called my phone asking if I was free to meet later in the evening. Of course even if I wasn’t I would of made sure I was. It’s not often the owner of a cigar company gives you a call requesting to light one up with you while he is on vacation.

Cigar Inn in NYC had an event today for the pre-release launch of the 15th Anniversary from Rocky Patel. If you purchased a box of cigars you received another box for free of a one of kind 15th Anniversary.

IMAG0233

The other night I was at Cigar Inn in NYC when I saw Pete Johnson of Tatuaje tweet that he was in New Jersey. After trying to find out if he was at a store or an event I pretty much gave up. I headed home and was ready to call it a night. That is until he called me out in a tweet..
