La Libertad comes from Vilager Stokkebye. Never heard of them? Well until recently, neither have I. According to the website, Villiger Stokkebye International combines many generations of two families and more than 240 years of experience in the tobacconist’s art into one company. The Villiger family of Switzerland and the Stokkbeye family of Denmark have [...]

Event Recap: Little Puff
I went down to Washington DC last week fresh off an asthma attack and suffering from allergies. While I came home on Saturday night, I had the full onslaught of chills, cough, fever, body aches and in full effect by Sunday morning. Needless to say the weekend I was off my game and in hindsight I should have sold my ticket. I did have a lot of fun though, especially at a dive bar after the event with some various twitter people, Matt Booth and Barry Blonder but we will leave that drunken debauchery for another time.. Here are some of the highlights…
Nat Sherman Flagship Store
Nestled between the high-rises of midtown Manhattan on the avenue you I’m taking you to, 42nd street, stands a lone townhouse. The townhouse is home to the self-proclaimed tobacconist to the world, Nat Sherman. The company which was born during the great depression in the 1930s has managed to stay in business for over 80 years. It has, in a sense become an icon in the world of tobacco.
I lit up my first cigar 13 years ago and I will be the first I am still a little wet behind the ears. Perhaps it is because I have not ventured out and broadened my horizons. During these 13 years I have been to Nat Sherman a total of 4 times, including yesterday, despite living within 10 miles of the store.

Labeling America: Cigar Box Designs by John Grossman
The art that goes into a cigar box or label can often make a person reach for a cigar. Over the years the art of the cigar has slowly been lost as many manufactures offer their cigars in plain wooden boxes. At the trade show some of the art of the past was on display at the La Palina booth and the current band pays homage to the beauty of the past. Most of the art that adorned brands of the past as been forgotten or never seen by today’s smoker, until now.
Music: Anders Holst – SoHo Suite
I recently got an email from a marketing firm asking if I would like to write a music review and to be honest, I had no intention of doing so. However, the email contained a link to the song on Sound Cloud and I liked what I heard. Despite being a metal head who is eagerly awaiting to see the Big Four at Yankees Stadium I was taken to a place I’ve never been before. The song allowed me to escape and get lost in my cigar as I had a vision of a smoke filled Jazz club. The soft Jazz was perfect to compliment my attempt to relax with a cigar.

News: CAO OSA SOL
We received a bunch of press releases today from General Cigar, but will hold off on posting the majority of them until we have the photography to go with them.
First up is the CAO OSA Sol, which features a proprietary wrapper cultivated in Hondurs in Olancho’s San Augustin valley. The cigar is is the first release for CAO under the auspices of General Cigar….
I recently had the chance to have dinner at Club Macanudo with Victori McKee who is the Director of Public Relations along with Rick Rodriguez from CAO. Rick who is in charge of new product development had an in depth conversation with acigarsmoker.com about the methods of aging and fermentation that CAO used in the past.
Event Recap: Primo Cigar Shop Golf Tournament
This past week our friends at Primo Cigar Shop in Santa Fe, New Mexico hosted their first annual golf tournament. The event which took place on July 12th at the Marty Sanchez golf course featured a shotgun start and 18 holes under blue skies with cotton like clouds in the distance over the the mountains of Sante Fe.
The event which cost $75 per person covered the cost of greens fees, cart and also included tees, balls, and premium cigars courtesy of the shop. After the event everyone headed back to the shop to enjoy a BBQ, Beverages and of course more cigars from the well stocked humidor which recently just had to add more shelves for the ever growing stock.

Press Release: Gran Habano Announces Zulu Zulu
Gran Habano is releasing their first member of their STK line. It’s a personal blend of George Rico called Zulu Zulu. The cigar appears to be a Lancero Size coming in at a 7 1/2 x 40 with a pig tail finish. This cigar will have an Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper, Nicaraguan binder, and Nicaraguan filler. According to the press release, this cigar was created years ago exclusively for George Rico’s private collection, by George himself, this will be the first time it is officially released to the public. This story sounds a lot like another private relase.
Speak Out! Keep the FDA out of your Humidors!
It seems every year politicians preach about making government smaller, but yet it seems to get bigger and bigger. The latest mind-boggling issue is that the FDA wants to get involved in the cigar industry. When will enough be enough? It is time to stand up to the local politicians and put our foot down while we still have a voice to do so. The land of the free, is not so free anymore my friends.
As Obamacare inches further toward reality, the government will look to control various aspects of the issues they consider to be a burden on the health care system. First is various forms of tobacco. We’ve lost the right to smoke in various places including our own private property. If we don’t stand up here, what will be next. In the 1900′s the people stood up to prohibition, and it is now time to stand up to prohibition 2.0.
The Tampa Bay Rays Get Censored
What makes someone want to change history (aka the Winston Churchill treatment)? Apparently, wanting to be “politically correct” is enough for Tampa Bay Rays to change theirs.
Sometimes, baseball teams have throwback nights where they don jerseys from yesteryear. This year, the rays have a throwback jersey chosen for the July 2 game. It’s a recreation of the Tampa Smokers design; but they aren’t exactly the same as the originals.
Smoke Inn Microblend Series & Radio Show
Abe from Smoke Inn in Florida has sent out information on his third micro-blend series cigar to be released this year. You may recall that earlier in 2011 was the Tatuaje Anarchy, followed by the Padron 6 x 60. Well this time it is my My Father Cigars and called the El Hijo. The cigar will feature a select 2009 harvest Ecuadorian Habano wrapper with binder and fillers from Nicaragua. The cigar will come in a 5.5 x 52 with an unfinished foot. Only 650 boxes of 15 are being made, and the cigar is being labeled as medium to full bodied. These should be available in August of 2011.
With Cigar Dave no longer being carried in South Florida, there was a void in the airwaves for those seeking Cigar information. Well, Abe has stepped up to that, and this Saturday he launches Kiss My Ash radio on 94.3 WZZR from 9am to 10am Eastern time. The show which can be heard live and on-line can listen to on-line via the website, kissmyashradio.com
Cigar Education Sells Cigars
Selling cigars is not about selling cigars. More often than not, it’s about the feeling a smoker gets once he (or she) purchases that cigar (says Christian Eiroa). Sometimes, the cigar smoker expects a little more at a brick and mortar store. That little something extra can be the shop keepers’ personalities, cigar blending sessions, or even deeper knowledge about …
