La Palina El Diario – Cigar Review

La Palina - El Diario - Band

I first found out about the resurrection of the La Palina brand from Gary Arzt and I was intrigued giving the history of the brand. We attended the launch event, loved the Pasha and were looking forward to the release of the El Diario. That time is here, and I had the chance to meet up with Bill Paley, owner of La Palina about 2 months ago at Cigar Inn in New York City. At the time we talked about the process of creating another cigar to the line that would hold true to the historical tradition of the brand.

According to La Palina website, Rolled at the Raices Cubanas factory in Honduras for La Palina Cigar, the El Diario is a perfect complement to our acclaimed original line, the Family Series. The La Palina El Diario is a richly flavored medium bodied cigar.

illusione ultra MK – Cigar Review

illusione ultra mk band

I don’t recall when I had my first illusione but I remember it was the ’68 Bombone’ that someone sent to me in a Cigar Bomb. Since then I have been a big fan of the illusione line. Perhaps I have been brainwashed, or there is something in these cigars that pull me back to them, or the countless other conspiracy theories I can come up with to poke some good-natured ribbing at the creator Dion Giolito. In the end though it is the quality that pulls me back to the brand made at the Raices Cubanas factory in Honduras.

The Ultra was first released a few years back but in a very small batch. Since then the cigar has undergone some changes so it fits in better with the original lineup. I picked up a 5-pack on-line as I was eager to try them. Right now you can only find them in a 5 1/8 x 42 format but more sizes are expected in the near future.

Room 101 Connecticut – Cigar Review

Room 101 Connecticut Band

The prior two Room 101 cigars have been met with mixed reviews online. The original release and the Conjura were good, but they weren’t revolutionary and I found myself getting bored with them. For me their shelf life was short and for this I felt bad because having met Matt Booth I found him to be a nice guy. So on my recent excursion to Tobacco Plaza in Great Neck, NY to check out what is new post IPCPR 2011 I hesitantly reached for the Room 101 Connecticut

Santos de Miami by Jameson Cigars – Cigar Review

Santos de Miami Band

About a week ago I was surfing through some cigar websites when I saw today’s smoke in the photo-stream over at stogiereview.com. The stream located at the bottom of the page had a cigar that utilized the colors of the Miami Dolphins. Despite being a Jets fan I have long loved the color combination and decided to order the stick based on appearance alone. The extreme box press, pig tail cap and color combination of the of the band had me ordering these in the blink of an eye.

Pedro Martin Ruby – Cigar Review

Martin_Family_Band

Pedro Martin is a legendary master blender, whose career began in Cuba and stretched to over 70 years in the industry. The cigars are rolled in Esteli in a factory that employs only 23 rollers owned by Eduardo Fernandez, but is not associated with Tropical Tobacco. Maria Martin is the founder of this new brand and is the daughter of Pedro Martin. She worked as the President of Tropical when it was still owned by her father. When he fell ill in 2001 he sold the company to Eduardo Fernandez. Maria then became the National Sales Manager for Camacho Cigars and helped build the brand until its sale in 2008 to Davidoff. In the spring of 2010 Pedro Martin passed away and this fueled Maria to bring back her father’s legacy. So along with Ammer Cabrera who is the VP and Co-Founder they have begun to introduce the cigars to the world.

Today is the first of 3 cigars from Pedro Martin that we will feature on the site. According to the company, The Pedro Martin Ruby is a medium-plus strength cigar with a Sun Grown Corojo wrapper. The Pedro Martin Ruby line is available in 6 x 60; Churchill (7” x 48); Robusto> (5” x 50); Toro (6” x 52) and a Torpedo (6 ¼” x 52).

J. Fuego Sangre de Toro – Cigar Review

JFuego_SangreDeToro_Band

I am a slacker, or at least I feel like one. I got these samples in the mail a month ago, if not more and they wound up buried in the list of cigars I need to review. So first off let me say Thank you to J. Fuego for sending me these sticks. Secondly, I am sorry it took so long to get to them.

Sangre de Toro which translates to Bull’s Blood sounds to me as if they trump Charlie Sheen’s tiger blood. The cigars will retail from $5.75 to $6.95 before local taxes and will come in Corona (5 1/2 ×46); Robusto (4 7/8 x 49),; Toro (6 ×50) and Belicoso (5 1/2 x 52).

The question remains, are these cigars a #winning experience?

Punch Rare Corojo 10th Anniversary – Cigar Review

Punch_10th_Band

When the Punch Rare Corojo entered the cigar marketplace I could not get enough of them. I wound up going through boxes of the rothechilde faster then my local cigar shop could keep them in stock. Sadly, between the time that they were released for the first time, and the 2nd years release something changed in the cigar. Rumour on the cigar boards called the cigar out for not being corojo. Regardless, I still found myself smoking these on a regular basis though they weren’t what they once were.

When I heard they were releasing the cigar in a 10th Anniversary Edition, I was seriously intrigued. According to the press release, “the 5” x 50 frontmark is unique in that it will feature a proprietary Connecticut Corojo wrapper. The new cigar will begin selling in late March for a suggested retail price of $6.50 per cigar until the limited supply is depleted. The cigars will be packed in eye catching cabinet style red wooden boxes and can be easily identified by a secondary red-and-gold band that bears the Rare Corojo distinction.”

La Aurora Cien Anos (100 Anos) – Cigar Review

100anosband

This review concludes La Aurora week on acigarsmoker.com. I appreciate the record number of page views and I thank those who took the time to leave a comment. I do have one question though, what causes a person to leave a comment? It seems like at times we go a while without any comment love and I would like to change that so let me know why you choose to leave a comment or why you don’t.

While at the La Aurora Cigar Factory from 3/17/11 to 3/20/11 we took part in a tasting seminar that was held by Jose Blanco in the conference room. After the tasting was complete Señor Blanco handed us each a La Aurora Cien Anos Churchill with 8 years of age on it. Well I decided to light mine up on the spot, and delve into a cigar legend. Sure I thought about reviewing it, but I was worried about the damage it might incur on the way home from the island nation that I have fallen in love with. As luck would have it, upon exiting the conference room I was handed another one, that made it home in great shape. I let it sit in my humidor for 5 days before today’s review.

Cigar Review: La Aurora Corojo

IMAG0321

When people ask me what I thought the best cigar was at IPCPR I usually answer one of two cigars. One of which is today’s review, the La Aurora Corojo. Sadly though I had no idea this cigar was coming out til I got one at the booth of the trade show. My focus was on the Guilermo Leon Signature and I hope this one does not get lost in the shuffle of my fellow smokers.

The La Aurora Corojo comes in 5 different sizes. The Aurora #4 (5.25 x 43), Belicoso (6.25 x 52), Double Corona (7.5 x 50), Gran Corona (6.5 x 50) and the Robusto (5 x 50). MSRP is $5.60 to 6.80 a cigar before any taxes.

Cigar Review: Viaje 50/50 Red Label

IMAG0301

Viaje is one of those cigars that I don’t see many places but when I run across them I always manage to pick some up. I believe the first place I ever saw them was at Little Taste of Cuba in Princeton, NJ after hearing about them for months on the cigar forums. Sadly more people do not know about the brand and I wish finding them was a little bit easier.

Thankfully I got my hands on some at the Twitter BOTL Cocktail Hour in New Orleans as Viaje was nice enough to donate some to the event.

The idea of the 50/50 is placing of two blends within one cigar. The first creation, the 50/50 Black was full and fuller, while this red is supposed to be more of a balanced smoke. The cigar comes in 3 sizes and are called the No. 1 (5.6 x 46), No. 2 (6 x 50), and No. 3 (7 x 47). Each cigar is a Nicaraguan Puro.

Cigar Review: El Baton

Today’s cigar is the perfect example of how powerful the cigar websites can be. The El Baton is a cigar I never really went out of my way for, but after seeing various reviews (some negative, some positive) I had to pick up a few to review. I believe I picked this up at my [...]

Cigar Review: ORTSAC 1962

For the first time in more than a week I am able to sit down in front of a computer and do some work. Last week while in the city of brotherly love I managed to mess my back up. Since then I have been dealing with sciatic nerve issues that prevent me from standing [...]

Cigar Review: Padilla Signature 1932

The brotherhood of the leaf is something that is not comprehended by those outside our community. We get together at local B&Ms where we bullshit, trade stories, laugh, and exchange cigars. One such place that this happens more than not is Barrister Cigars. This past Tuesday I gave a friend an illusione 88, and Michael [...]
