Illusione MJ 12 Maduro – Cigar Review

Illusione MJ12 Band

2011 has been a big year for Dion. First he came out with one of the best candela cigars I have ever smoked. Then he moved his cigar shop Fumare located in Reno, Nevada into a bigger location. Lastly, some sizes (CG:4, 88, 888, and MJ 12) of the Illusione Original Documents got the Maduro treatment. The cigars don’t look like your typical maduro, but more on that later.

The MJ 12 shows the mind of Dion at work. A believer of some conspiracy theories the MJ 12 was named after the Majestic 12. The scientists that allegedly were assigned to the Roswell incident in 1947 by President Harry S. Truman. The original MJ 12 release was wrapped in silver foil to acknowledge the alleged cover up by the US Government. This time around, the MJ 12 Maduro is wrapped in black foil.

Illusione ~1~ – Cigar Review

Illusione 1 The Dark Prince - Band

When La Sirena Series A came out, I went into a bit of a kick on the vitola. I picked up some cigars here and there and placed them in my humidor, why I do not know. You really need to have the time to invest in smoking a cigar that is over 9″ long. Well one of those days has arrived with the start of college football season. So with Penn State on the tube I pulled out today’s smoke (which was smoked on Saturday, but posted today, Monday).

According to the illusione website…

illusione ultra MK – Cigar Review

illusione ultra mk band

I don’t recall when I had my first illusione but I remember it was the ’68 Bombone’ that someone sent to me in a Cigar Bomb. Since then I have been a big fan of the illusione line. Perhaps I have been brainwashed, or there is something in these cigars that pull me back to them, or the countless other conspiracy theories I can come up with to poke some good-natured ribbing at the creator Dion Giolito. In the end though it is the quality that pulls me back to the brand made at the Raices Cubanas factory in Honduras.

The Ultra was first released a few years back but in a very small batch. Since then the cigar has undergone some changes so it fits in better with the original lineup. I picked up a 5-pack on-line as I was eager to try them. Right now you can only find them in a 5 1/8 x 42 format but more sizes are expected in the near future.

Dion Unveils Cruzado Packaging Change

cruzado_band

Ah the power of social media, and what one can learn on Twitter. Dion Giolito who’s bio reads, “Cigar Brand owner – illlusione – Cruzado – Epernay – Cuchillos Cubanos – Stray Dog – Singularé 2010 EL. Straight-up boutique cigars for heavy cigar enthusiasts” shared with the cigar community his changes for the Cruzado Packaging. From a band tweak to slimmer boxes for the retailers the subtle changes seem to be a huge plus.

Cigar Review: Illusione 88 Candela

88candela

Top O’ the morning to you lads! For the most part I have never met a candela I like with the exception being the Arturo Fuente 858. At one time candela wrappers were easy to find and I remember them having a little section in a local Humidor during the cigar boom, and for the most part they did nothing for me. I wanted to smoke one of these last week when the Jets beat the Patriots but I had to put it off as I was sick.

It seems like everything Dion touches lately turns to gold and the candela is no exception. It feels like Dion has brought back the candela as these cigars have been sought after by collectors, connoisseurs and everyone in between. As soon as some online retailers get them, they are gone and Dion has assured us via twitter that as long as there is a demand for the green, he will produce them.

Cigar Review: Nosotros

nosotros

Tomas is back with a review and he has this to say, This past April, I (and a few of my very good friends) attended the Texas Cigar Festival held at Serious Cigars in Houston. I was pleasantly surprised to see that Dion Giolito was there. We had a nice chat, took some photos and picked his brain about what it was that inspired the joint effort between him and Jonathan Drew. Curiously enough, Dion was originally collaborating with JDN in an effort to expand his product line. While that was in process Drew Estate subsequently took over the distribution rights for JDN and due to circumstances beyond his control, Dion’s original plan came to an abrupt halt… That was his initial meeting with Jonathan Drew. Shortly thereafter, the death of a mutual friend brought them together again at the funeral. It was then that Jonathan invited Dion to come visit his facilities in Nicaragua.

An Interview with Dion Giolito

illusione-cigars

Dion from illusione was nice enough to sit down with us and answer some questions as we recover from an upper respitory illness that has prevented us from smoking. I can’t thank him enough for taking the time out of his busy schedule to answer a few questions. As you know we here at acigarsmoker.com are big fans of his cigars. From the original illusione line, Cruzado, Cuchilos Cubanos, Epernay and the new Nosotros.

I recently received a care package from Bonita Smoke Shop down in Florida and one of the cigars I got was the illusione 88. I was surprised to see that I have yet to review this cigar here on the site when I have easily smoked over 100 of them.

Cigar Review: Cuchillos Cubanos

Convenience, flavor and value merge. Cuchillos Cubanos is a 60/40 blend of long and medium filler tobacco in efficient European sizes and packaging. Cuchillos Cubanos delivers rich and hearty cigar flavor without the large cigar format. All cigars are hand-made, double binded and finished with a silky grade A coverleaf.  Made for an “on-the-go” lifestyle [...]

Sunday Links

The New Yankee Stadium. It is a 1.1 billion dollar bust. in 3 home games there have been 17 home runs which is absolutely ludicrous. I find it hard to believe the engineers did not realize they created a wind tunnel to right field. Yesterday’s 22-4 loss to the Cleveland Indians would of made no [...]

Cigar Review: Illusione HL (Holy Lance)

Continuing my trend into lancero cigars I went into the humidor today and selected the Illusione HL by Dion Giolito. Will this lancero score big or will be it a dud? In my growing quest to jump into the lancero phase I bring this review to you, my readers. Cigar: Illusione Origin: Nicaragua Size: HL [...]

Cigar Review: Cruzado

For me my world changed when i was introduced to cigars that were not common place in many cigar ships. Cigars by Dion Giolito fit that bill. The creator of Illusione cigars is at it again with the Cruzado cigar. This cigar was introduced at the IPCPR trade show earlier in 2008. The sizes are [...]
