Liga Privada Unico Series L40 Lancero – Cigar Review

Liga Privada L40 Band

Last night I was lucky enough to be invited to the Nat Sherman event for the launch of the Liga Privada L40 lancero. The cigar which was launched at two locations, the first being Casa de Montecristo in Chicago, and the other was attended by over 50 guests in the Johnson Room at Nat Sherman. Prior to the event a great Q&A was set up by Michael Herklots in the executive meeting room prior to the party.

JD told of their humble beginnings in a kiosk in the World Trade Center back in 1996, his graduating law school in 1998, and moved to Nicaragua.

Undercrown by Drew Estate – Cigar Review

Undercrown Band

For fans of the Liga Privada you might have noticed a bit of a shortage lately, and perhaps it is that reason to why the Undercrown was created. As the stories go, the rollers on the factory floor were told to smoke less Liga. The press release states, “Undercrown is a liga blended on our factory floor by the best of our Liga Privada torcedores for themselves due to our request that they smoke less of the cigars they were crafting. Incorporating many of the same rare tobaccos, but of different vintages and primings, the cigar they created was no mere replacement. Earthy, creamy, spicy with a delicious black tobacco sweet finish, Undercrown is an exceptional smoking experience of uncompromising quality and flavor that deserves to be smoked by all.”

The result is a cigar can basically be called the half-brother to the Liga Privada line. Will the cigar become the black sheep of the family or will it be widely accepted. That is the question that can only be answered over time. But here is my opinion none the less.

FDA Involvement Must Be Stopped!

The possibility of dark days for the tobacco industry is closer to a reality then ever before, but as retailers, consumers, and manufacturers the future is also bright if we get involved.

In 2009, President Barack Obama passed the Family Smoking & Prevention Act which left a loophole for the FDA involvement in the premium cigar industry. The law gave the FDA regulatory authority over all tobacco products, but to branch beyond cigarettes and smokeless, the agency must seek expanded authority. That is what they are doing with cigars, and why they must be stopped. If the FDA gets involved the way we enjoy our right to smoke will be changed forever. Prohibition 2.0 will become a step closer to reality.

Liga Privada Unico Series L40 Lancero – Specs

LIGA_UNICO_2011aa

According to Drew Estate, “In our ongoing creation of the Liga Privada line, hundreds of different, distinct blends and vitolas are crafted in our ceaseless search for the perfect smoke. Most samples are dismissed with only a rare, select few being deemed worthy, but regretfully due to tobacco limitations, costs, construction limitations, etc. most of these blends can not be made into a their own stand-alone line. However, they are so perfect in flavor and aroma, we continue to selfishly make them for ourselves to smoke. This is not our desire, we want the Liga Privada connoisseur to enjoy the very same cigars our “El Jefe” smokes regardless of any reason. And with this in mind, we have created the Único Serie – a home for these unique nes. All of the cigars within this series are not only different in size and recipe, but they are extra special, extremely limited and exceptionally delicious.”

Q & A with Jose Blanco

Jose, thank you for taking the time to teach me more and more about tobacco everytime we meet. As a fellow Yankee fan we share a common bond that is only surpassed by our love of cigars. I look toward the time when we can sit back and enjoy a cigar together.

News recently rocked the cigar world that Jose Blanco was stepping down from his position at La Aurora and retiring. Now that the dust has settled we got to catch up with Jose Blanco who is currently enjoying himself on a European vacation. During our brief conversation, one can read between the lines and say he left the door open a bit for a return to the cigar industry and this might not be the end of his career.

My Uzi Weighs A Ton – Cigar Review

uzi

My Uzi Weighs a Ton is the latest creation from Drew Estate, but it’s name has been around since the days of Chuck D and Flavor Flav. Above are some lyrics from the song by Public Enemy and while I am not a fan of rap one cannot deny the effect of the group on the social climate of the inner city.

Like their rap predecessors Drew Estate has had a similar effect on the social climate of the cigar world and their innovative approach is not matched by anyone in the business, but what do you expect from a couple of kids from Brooklyn…. If you want to read more about the release check out…

Liga Privada T52 “Royale With Cheese” – Pre-Release Cigar Review

LigaPrivadaT52RWC_band

Usually a code name is for a project that is top-secret, but Drew Estate has had no problem making this project public. The Liga Privada T52 6 x 60 has been assigned the code name “Royale With Cheese” and is extremely unlikely that the cigar will be released with that name. So with the 60 ring gauge craze firmly in place the Liga T52 has arrived at the party fashionably late and while it has yet to be determined if they will stay I was looking forward to smoking this cigar. The size while not among my favorite has begun to grow on me, and as a fan of the T52 as noted in my Flying Pig & Toro reviews I was curious to see what it had to offer.

Event Recap: New Jersey Cigar Festival

Cigar-Fest-Logo-for-A-Cigar-Smoker-12.22.10

On a beautiful Sunday afternoon, Newark Bears baseball stadium became the field of dreams for cigar smokers. As I lined up with the VIPs in the morning, with my cigar in hand it felt weird to be smoking at a baseball stadium, but at the same time it felt right. As the gates opened, we walked in and were given our VIP bag which was small compared to other events but of higher quality then most… Inside the VIP bag was a humidor, with cigars such as the Avo 85th, Nestor Miranda Danno 2010, Tatuaje Red Label, Alec Bradley Tempus, Martin Family of Cigars, Los Blancos, Reinaldo and Joya De Nicaragua as well as various others.

Once inside the event had more of a…

Liga Privada L40 (Pre-Release) – Cigar Review

L40 PreReleaseBand

First a big shout out goes to Steve Valle who is one of the reviewers over at Smoking Stogie. About a week ago, out of the blue he decided to send me some rarities, including today’s cigar. If you haven’t check out the work they do over there, be sure to visit them. Top notch photography, great reviews and most of all good people.

The “LP L40″ is the latest cigar floating around from the guys at Drew Estate. Last year they let some dirty rat’s float around the cigar community and the feedback pretty much sealed the deal to release them. This year it is the L40, a lancero and the Ratzilla which is twice as long as the Dirty Rat are working the same circuit. I have heard the Ratzilla is 100% confirmed for the release but the L40 doesn’t seem to be 100% official yet.

The LP L40 is a bit of a departure for Steve Saka who is not a big fan of the lancero, and according to him the cigar needed to go through numerous tweaks to reach the final blend. He often feels at times that a lancero can be a little bit one-dimensional and he did not want to fall into that trap with this vitola. In fact, he cheated to a degree by going to a 40 ring, allowing him the chance to add one extra leaf to the mix.

I just read up on Saint Valentine on the web, and there is nothing to suggest that this martyr of the Catholic church has anything to do with the traditions of modern Valentine’s Day. The feast of St. Valentine first occurred in the year, 496 and it was established by Pope Gelasius I. In fact no one really is sure who Saint Valentine was as he appeared in various martyologies. Throughout history he has been described as a priest in Rome, a bishop or priest in Interamna or a Martyr in the Roman province of Africa. Knowing that what I am about to say isn’t sacrilegious makes me feel more comfortable knowing that God will not strike me down for this view, but I will probably further secure my seat in hell. For me, I picture hell as being a room full of excellent cigars but not having anything to light them with.
