Top 15 Cigars of 2010

top15_2010

Every year many cigar smokers look forward to the yearly release of Top Cigars from Cigar Aficionado. In fact I know one person from New Jersey who usually uses that list to make a large purchase of boxes as put out by that magazine. Love them or hate them manufacturers want to get on that list. However, the last few years I have not agreed with many cigars that make the list. While the Casa Magna is a great stick was it really deserving of cigar of the year?

The criteria to make out list is simple, it had to be released in 2010.

Sunday Links

Ah the last Sunday of the year, a year that has flown by. It seems as I get older the years go by quicker. While I know they all move at the same pace it seems funny how much time is beginning to fly by. Even yesterday as I was driving around town on Christmas Day looking to see what was open I stumbled upon a barber shop. I needed a haircut and since no one was present I decided to get my hair cut. The result was more proof that I am indeed getting older. As the hairs fell off my head I was shocked at the amount of gray that was present but thankfully there is no bald spot yet and the hairline isn’t receding.

It’s funny I set off to write about the blizzard happening in NYC right now but I got side-tracked. As a kid I couldn’t wait for it to snow now all I can think of is the potential heart attack of shoveling out my driveway after 15″ of snow falls.

For now the Sunday Links…

Event: New Jersey Cigar Festival

njcf

Seems like cigar festivals are becoming more and more the rage. While they do help promote the community and bring people together one has to wonder when it becomes overkill. Thankfully we have not yet reached the case and a new one is starting up right across the river from my hometown.

The New Jersey Cigar Festival will be held on Saturday, April 2, 2011 at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium in Newark!

Event: A Benefit to Give Back

Marines Corp Seal Plaque 1

We have all heard stories about soldiers who have had their lives changed because of the sacrifice they have made fot our country. We have also heard stories about families and how it has changed their lives. Sometimes it happens so close to home that a whole community feels the effects. Such is the case in Monroe Township, NJ.

On November 30th my good friend Jim Ryan will be hosting an event at his bar/restaurant for Marine Lance Corporal Colin Pascik who lost his legs during a tour of Afghanistan in the short 2.5 weeks he was there. I would like to take the time to publicly thank Jason Wood over at Miami Cigar & Company, Dave Lafferty from Drew Estate, Dylan Austin from Camacho and Jon Huber at CAO who have graciously donated cigars for the fundraiser. I also know the New York Yankees have donated tickets.

Ryan’s Pub & Sports Bar is located at 299 Spotswood Englishtown Road Monroe Township, NJ 08831-8626 and I plan to be there for a while for this worthy cause hope to see you as well and there is an area out back to enjoy a stogie under some heaters.

Also in New York City is a scheduled hearing on the outdoor smoking ban that would ban smoking in pedestrian plazas, beaches, and city owned parks. What bothers me the most about this is that once the plan was first announced there has been no sighting of any of the tobacco groups in the mainstream news other then a debate on the local news channel New York 1.

Cigar Review: Liga Privada T52 Flying Pig

flyingpig-tn

My writers block really began just before the the trade show in New Orleans so when I came back there was so much I wanted to write about but I couldn’t really come up with the words to tell the story. There were a lot of manufacturers who really welcomed me down in New Orleans and I needed to give them a shout out but they got pushed to the back burner as I went through the motions.

One of these people are Dave Lafferty from Drew Estate. Every time I see Dave he goes out of his way to say hello and shoot the shit so to speak. It was no different in New Orleans as he approached me at a local cigar bar to give me a handshake and a pat on the back. He also reached into his shirt pocket and gave me a Flying Pig of the T52 variety. This is a review based on one cigar.

Cigar Review: Liga Privada Ünico Serie “Dirty Rat”

Dirty Rat

I was lucky enough to smoke today’s review as both a pre-release and actual release and recently there was some conversation about the cigar coming off different. I hope to answer that question today at least from my own perspective of things.

According to Steve Saka, Drew Estate’s President, “At this point, we have made 200 or more Liga Privada blends. There are probably 9 or 10 of them so far that are exceptional, however their blends differ from both the No. 9 and the T52 branded cigars. They’re cigars that work as a particular size, such as a lancero or corona, with the blend being unique to that particular vitola. The ‘Dirty Rat’ is a great example of this, so we have decided to introduce this as the first cigar in the Ünico line.”

The “Dirty Rat” is a stout 5 inch by 44 ring gauge corona with a fan-twist finished head utilizing their Stalk Cut and Cured, Connecticut Sungrown Habana capa, which is the same wrapper featured on the Liga Privada T52.

Cigar Review: Nosotros

Tomas is back with a review and he has this to say, This past April, I (and a few of my very good friends) attended the Texas Cigar Festival held at Serious Cigars in Houston. I was pleasantly surprised to see that Dion Giolito was there. We had a nice chat, took some photos and picked his brain about what it was that inspired the joint effort between him and Jonathan Drew. Curiously enough, Dion was originally collaborating with JDN in an effort to expand his product line. While that was in process Drew Estate subsequently took over the distribution rights for JDN and due to circumstances beyond his control, Dion’s original plan came to an abrupt halt… That was his initial meeting with Jonathan Drew. Shortly thereafter, the death of a mutual friend brought them together again at the funeral. It was then that Jonathan invited Dion to come visit his facilities in Nicaragua.

Event Recap: Drew Estate Dinner @ De La Concha

_MG_5726

In the grand scheme of things I have not been smoking cigars for long. Sure 15 years doesn’t make me a novice, but it wasn’t long enough to truly enjoy the art of cigar smoking when it wasn’t considered taboo by society. I missed out on fine dining and being able to light up a cigar afterward. I missed out on being able to light up in a bar as I sipped my Johnny Walker Blue. I really had no idea what it was like to smoke in a time where I wasn’t considered a second class citizen.

That is until last night.

Cigar Review: Dirty Rat by Drew Estate

dirtyratlabel

I am back, and boy does it feel good to be. About 8 days ago my Verizon DSL decided not to work the way it was supposed to. My internet speed was down to 12kbps which allowed me to do nothing online. I am extremely computer literate and tech support for Verizon which is located in the Philippines was a nightmare. They just don’t get that power cycling the modem was useless. After 5 phone calls I finally managed to get them to realize the problem was in the Central Office and this morning my DSL was back at full strength. Which is good because my building where I live isn’t quite FIOS ready.
