General Cigar Dominicana Trip 2011 – Closing Thoughts

IMG_9637

When you mention General Cigars many people have a difference of opinion. Some smoke them exclusively, and some feel the tobacco is inferior. In the online community General doesn’t get much play and it is obvious that they are looking to change that. In touring the factory you notice the workers from the janitor to management, all have a great pride about them and the work they do. They all feel they are producing a product that is the best, regardless of what you and I may think.

Each day we were given cigars to smoke, and the most popular among the group was the Macanudo Cru Royale, Partagas Red, Partagas Black and the new La Gloria Cubana Retro Esepciale.

General Cigar Dominicana Trip 2011 – Day 4

She must me thinking, that crazy gringo!

Writing about the trip went as fast as the trip, and as we hit our last full day on the ground a sense of sadness came over me. While the trip was different then my trips of the past it was great to spend time with my fellow bloggers and build some new friendships within the community. The last day started like all others, breakfast, and the deck to enjoy a cigar. At 8:30 we all boarded the bus to head to the General Cigar factory where we would be put to work.

For this gringo, it would be like working in a sweatshop…

General Cigar Dominicana Trip 2011 – Day 3

Partagas, I forgot how much I enjoy this cigar...

With the night before ending at 4am for some people, the day got off to a bit of a sluggish start for some as the 8am meet time was earlier then the day before. This led to some confusion when it came time to leave, and to protect the parties involved we will leave it at that. We headed out to Licey al Medio which is like a suburb of Santiago. As we left the city and neared out destination you can tell we entered a province of poverty. The factory which we were visiting and the farm we would visit later was once owned by Copata before being acquired by General Cigars.

General Cigar Dominicana Trip 2011 – Day 2

Area Fumadores (Even the Dominican Republic has smoking laws)

As I sit back and write these little recaps I realize that there was a massive amount of information. The amount of work and the number of people that go into making a cigar is amazing. After one tour of the factory it is amazing that we don’t pay 5 times the amount for a cigar then we currently do. While I am not advocating a price hike, I am not sure how companies turn a profit even with the low wages some of these employees get in comparison to jobs here in the states even with the lower cost of living.

Day 2 began with …

A while back I was contacted by Victoria McKee who is the Director of Public Relations for General Cigar. She asked if I would be interested in taking part in a Blogger Trip to the Dominican Republic. When it came down to making a decisions I weighed the options and the thought of cigars, rum, blogger madness (I didn’t get married this time) and the amazing people of the Dominican Republic the choice was rather easy. When I accepted I discussed some flight options that had me originally leaving mid-afternoon. However, I wanted to get there early and plans were put in place.

La Gloria Cubana Artesanos Retro Especiale – Cigar Review

La Gloria Cubana Artesanos Retro Especiale Band

If you look at the teams that General Cigar has created they do not have what you would consider to be the traditional route of a cigar company. For example, Michael Giannini was born in Philadelphia, PA. Hardly the tobacco hotbed and yet he has grown into his position after spending 25 years in the business. Looking at Michael you wouldn’t expect him to be so involved in blending with his fashionable style he seems more suited to be involed over at GQ then with La Gloria Cubana.Looks can be deceiving.

The latest release from La Gloria Cubana, The Artesanos Retro Especiale. According to the press release,

Press Release: La Gloria Cubana Artesanos Retro Especiale

Continuing its tradition of innovation, Team La Gloria is proud to introduce La Gloria Cubana® Artesanos Retro Especiale, a collection that spent eight years in the making. Inspired by an antique humidor found at the El Credito® Cigar Factory, Michael Giannini and Team La Gloria toiled for nearly a decade to replicate the antique humidor. [...]

Wayne Newton to Accept Donation to the USO Las Vegas at IPCPR Tradeshow at Sands Expo

USOLV IMAGE

News surfaced today from General Cigar Company that solidifies to this blogger why the trade show needs to stay in Vegas. It also solidifies my belief that the cigar community is the most generous around. Despite our constantly being under attack by those who think they know best we continue to step up to the plate to help others.

General Cigar will be presenting Wayne Newton with a $20,000.00 check for the USO on Monday July 18th. The donation made on behalf of IPCPR will be at 2pm at booth 412 in Exhibit Halls B and C.

El Perrito War of Flavors – Cigar Review

IMG_8361

It seems like it has been forever since I reviewed a cigar. I had written many in advance and now I am back to writing them on the fly. When I post in this method generally speaking I have smoked at least 2 cigars previously of the brand I am reviewing in the same vitola. Sometimes a cigar is too expensive for this method, or a company sent me samples in different sizes. In the end about 80% of the time though, I have smoked a few before writing the review.

Today’s review is of El Credito, El Perrito War of Flavors. According to the press release…

Press Release: TEAM LA GLORIA DEBUTS “EL PERRITO WAR OF FLAVORS”

TLG

Richmond, VA–Team La Gloria® presents El Perrito War of Flavors, an innovative new cigar handcrafted entirely by hand and shaped without a cigar mold.

The cigar’s distinctive name is derived from a term coined at the El Credito® Cigar Factory in Santiago, DR. El Perrito (translation: little dog) was created by two cigar factory supervisors (Robert Batista and Juan Almonte) who brought their concept for a small, powerhouse cigar to El Credito’s Michael Giannini (director of marketing) and Yuri Guillen (director of manufacturing). The supervisors came to Michael and Yuri, raving about how they made the cigars and describing the taste experience as a battle of flavors in the mouth. Michael and Yuri sampled the prototypes and the rest, as they say, is history.

Cigar Review: La Gloria Cubana Artesanos de Obelisco

Obelisco-Cigar

I had like 10 samples of today’s cigar all of which were obtained at IPCPR in New Orleans. I smoked 7 of them pretty fast and really liked this cigar but for some reason they got lost in my humidor and I never got around to reviewing these. Well, long story short I rearranged my humidors yesterday and rotated these to the top and that how we got to the review today.

The La Gloria Cubana Artesanos de Obelisco is another cigar from General Cigar that will have retailers less then happy due to packaging. The over-sized half moon box of these cigars look good, but many retailers are starved for shelf space especially after the convention due to the influx of new cigars and orders to take advantage of trade show deals. In face I know one retailer who had the option to get these but refused since he did not have the space. General has been good to me and I hate to be critical but they really need to consider retailers when producing some of their packaging.

Cigar Review: La Gloria Cubana Serie N

LGC_SerieN_single

I was thinking of shutting down the website this past week and to be honest I panicked. I have never suffered from writers block in my life because I do not consider myself a writer. I know some people don’t like the self depreciation but all joking aside I do not consider myself one. Well I guess I was wrong because I lost the ability to write and to be creative and it was a bit scary. For the first time in a month I had the urge to update this website instead of forcing myself to do just that.

Today’s update is the La Gloria Cubana Serie N, the N stands for Nicaragua.

So it seems some people well one person on twitter has told me that I should rename my blog along the lines of Miami Cigars Blog or something. I don’t get this because while I have grown close to the people at Miami Cigar Company and La Aurora Cigars I still strive to bring a variety of reviews from across the board. It just so happens that MCC had the most new releases under there brand and distribution at this years trade show. I still have to review the Art Deco, La Aurora Corojo, La Aurora 107 Lancero, and La Sirena. Not to mention the video review (which is more of a political statement) of the Tatiana Cigars because I lost a bet to Tatiana.

I am not sure how the masses feel but …

Saturday News: IPCPR Version 2.

ipcpr

Despite a lot of the new releases coming out a little early like the Rocky Patel 15th Anniversary and the CAO La Traviata Maduro there were a few surprises to the IPCPR that I didn’t know about. Now this doesn’t mean that they were a surprise to all but they did manage to catch me off guard.

EP Carrillo – I went out with a few of my fellow bloggers for lunch. Upon walking in I noticed Ernesto and his family sitting and having lunch. After a quick hello so has not to disturb their lunch I sat down in the back of the restaurant and enjoyed some Aligator. During the course of our meal Ernesto had the waiter come over and buy us a round of drinks which was totally classy.
