Tatuaje Tattoo – Cigar Review

Tatuaje_Tattoo_Band

People often ask me what does Tatuaje mean when I recommend the cigars, and I always inform them it means Tattoo. In fact in my circle of friends some call Tatuaje, “Tattoo” because it is easier to pronounce and remember. Pete Johnson the man behind the brand is covered in Tattoos so the name is a perfect fit. As a fan of Pete Johnson the person and the cigar brand Tatuaje I was happy to see a cigar released called “Tattoo” for whatever the reason may be.

The Tattoo is slated to be released yearly in a new size each and every time. The first release limited to 5100 cigars and is a box pressed lancero.

Viaje Skull & Bones WMD – Cigar Review

ViajeSkullWMDBand

I try to keep and open mind when reviewing cigars that do not fit my profile, and every now and then I find what I consider to be a gem with Cro-Magnon. And I will be the first to preface this review by stating the cigar does not fit my profile. But I like to think that I review a cigar fairly based upon the construction, notes, characteristics and more. I do not hate Andre Farkas the brand owner of Viaje and to be honest I only met him for 10 seconds at IPCPR in 2010. With that said and done, I find more of the Viaje cigars to be a miss instead of a hit. I know I am in the minority, as Viaje has a cult following. However, I wonder if the cult following is because of the cigars, or the rarity of them.

Will the Skull & Bones Weapons of Mass Destruction blow me away, or will it be a dud?

Viaje White Label Project (Candela) – Cigar Review

viajewlpcandelalabel

I really should read the book, How to Make Friends and Influence People. Every now and then someone or something comes along that gets under my skin. The result is I go off on a tangent, and someone gets mad at me. It leads to jokes about my brake lines being cut, and me having to go into damage control to save my ass. Today’s cigar is just that. Today’s company is just that.

For me Viaje is the most annoyingly frustrating cigar company out there. How many limited edition sticks will they copy from someone else? At least with other companies, tracking them down is easy. With Viaje I know no one locally who carries these. In fact I know of one shop that won’t carry Viaje because he considers the owner of Viaje to be a plagiarist.

News: AVO 85th LE 2011 *official press release*

I wasn’t going to post this, but it contains updated blend information. Despite being told by Edward Simon directly it was a Dominican Puro, news officially comes out today that it won’t. I welcome this since the cigar now contains my personal favorite, Peruvian tobacco…

Cigar Review: Diesel Shorty

dieselshorty

Recently I took part in another Cigar Pass this one started by the guys over at Toasted Foot. I saw a few cigars in there I haven’t reviewed and being that January is a slow month in the cigar world I figured I would attack one of those cigars today. It seems like AJ Fernandez is everywhere today and this is yet another cigar from him. The Diesel Shorty some people have described as yet another cigar inspired by Nub and being it checks in at 4.5 x 60 I can see how people make the comparison.

Cigar Review: Gran Reserva Gran Habano #3

grgh3band

It seems like this year Gran Habano Cigars got the first new stick on the market with the Gran Reserva Gran Habano #3 cigar. The stick features a wrapper aged 8 with the binder and filler aged for 7 years. According to a local retailer he said each year the company will release a limited production cigar. Today’s stick was rolled back in 2008 where it sat aging two more years in its finished format before reaching stores. He also added that there was a familiarity to the stick which he compared to the Gran Habano 3 Siglo and I couldn’t agree more. The Siglo 3 is no longer available due to General Cigars/Swedish Match owning the name Siglo.

Being a fan of George Rico the person and the brand Gran Habano I was curious to what he cooked up with his father Guillermo Rico and was eager to try this cigar, so without hesitation I picked up a few of them this week. Today’s review is the 3rd stick I smoked and from a different box and store then the original 2.

Cigar Review: Tatuaje Anarchy

tatuajeanarchyband

A few months back a website appeared on the Internet promoting Tatuaje Anarchy and a lot of people were intrigued to what was going on. But the mystique as to what or who was behind it was answered relatively quickly due to some copyright searches. In case you still don’t know what the Tatuaje Anarchy is about, allow me to explain.

Abe who owns Smoke Inn in Florida has had a great relationship with Pete Johnson from Tatuaje and he approached him about doing a cigar for his shops 15th Anniversary. A new cigar, size and blend that would be a limited edition but made in enough quantity that people should not have a problem getting these. Given the success of this great marketing campaign that is no small order.

Cigar Review: Oliva V Maduro 2010

vmaduroband

So over the past couple of weeks my local shops got in their allotment of the Oliva V Maduro 2010. I picked up a couple of sticks here, and a a few more there. This was a huge change from the 2009 edition for me as I purchased 2 boxes last year but out of those 20 sticks, 18 of them had horrible draw issues and it left me turned off. Sad to say over the past year I didn’t nearly smoke as many Oliva cigars despite having a great relationship with the local rep. I was just turned off by the “wasted money” of 2 boxes with bad draws.

So here we are in 2010 and the question is, Will these 2010 V Maduro’s be as great at the 2008 batch, or a horrible as the 2009 version. Or perhaps fall somewhere in between. Here is my answer… How does it compare to yours?

Cigar Review: Singulare Phantom LE 2010

singulate_band

Note to manufacturers, cigars with white bands and light colors are hard to photograph. That being said the Singulare is the latest offering from Dion Giolito in terms of a new brand. Sadly finding these locally have been hard and I had to rely on my friend Izzy from Uptown Cigar Company to send me some for review. The reason they have been so difficult is a few retailers I visit were hesitant to order these after the Nosotros which they deemed to be a failure. While I am not sure if I agree with that it is the reasoning behind my difficulty in getting these sticks.

Having met Dion in New Orleans I didn’t get much time to talk to him about these but the sticks are a limited edition, and come in boxes of 15 of which only 1000 boxes were made. I cued up some Social Distortion and I lit up the cigar and below is my opinion on them.

Cigar Review: Viaje Skull and Bones

skullnbones_tn

When my cigar journey began it started in a local shop and while it served it’s purpose you are locked into what that shop feels fit to order and many of times that is the industry standard. I first began learning about the boutique cigar companies when I made my way to the cigar boards. On my favorite board which is now defunct I managed to make a bunch of friends some of which i stay in touch with that are local to me. A perfect example is Jitzy who I got together with at a local jaunt for a cigar. As cigar board customs would have it we traded some sticks and one that he gave me was todays review which I will be basing on one stick.

The Viaje Skull and Bones batch 1 was almost impossible to obtain from what I hear and this is version #2. What is the difference between the 2, I couldn’t tell you but I know this small batch production is heavily sought out by collectors and people with an obsession such as myself.

Cigar Review: Tatuaje Pork Tenderloin

DSC_0356

Hello, my name is Barry and I am a Tatuaje addict. It doesn’t even stop at cigars, because I love girls with tattoos but that is a story for another time. Yes, I am a self admitted Pete Johnson whore. If Pete produces it I will buy it. It is simple as that. The latest venture into a cigar marketed by Pete Johnson is today’s review. You see my good friend Charlie who runs The Cigar Feed contacted me about this great cigar I had to try so he sent me one and I was crazy about it. So we got to talking on Twitter night and with the help of Big Doug we found someone who still had them in stock. After some discussion John who runs Well Capped, Charlie and myself decided to split the bundle. Normally I would of grabbed one myself but with a lot of other cigar commitments this month I had to go for the split.

The power of social media has yet to be fully understood by many of today’s corporations but the Miami Cigar Company & La Aurora Cigars are doing a good job of harnessing that power. Guillermo Leon, La Aurora Cigars and Miami Cigar Co. have answered that demand, and the day for release is near.

Cigar Review: Camacho Liberty 2010

camacho-liberty-2010-band

It’s that time of the year that Camacho releases the yearly Liberty edition and having seen these in one of my local shops, Fume located in Montclair, New Jersey I had to pick up a few of them for review. I’ll be honest in saying the Liberty series has been hit or miss for me but I will always run out and pick them up to smoke. In the past I reviewed the 2007 , 2008, 2009 and to be honest with you I wish I had the others laying around to say I have reviewed the whole series to date.
