La Aurora Trip 2011 Edition, Day 3

La-Aurora-Cigars-Logo

The final full day began like any other, with an early wake up call to enjoy the view of Santiago. As a person who has lived in the City of New York for 42 years, having one of these rare moments to enjoy the some quiet need to be taken advantage of. I took the time to explore the grounds of the hotel with my camera and enjoy a cigar. As I did a sense of sadness came over me, that I was soon going to leave and that the time spent with friends was coming to a close. With split departure times, the first one being at 6am this was the last full day together.

La Aurora Trip 2011 Edition, Day 2

As was with my last trip to Santiago in the Dominican Republic I made sure to get up early each morning and be the first one on the deck. The views were just so incredibly scenic, that it was easy to get lost in the moment and bask in the serenity of the mountaintop resort that we would call home for the next couple of days. I sipped my coffee and looked out into the valley before me, for I feel at home in the Dominican Republic.Despite various levels of wealth and poverty everyone has a smile on their face and it is contagious.

La Aurora Trip 2011 Edition, Day 1

A funny thing happened in the Dominican Republic, you see I may of or may not of gotten married. But more of that on day 3. For now some back story. In 2010, I was lucky enough to be invited with a group of bloggers to visit the La Aurora Cigar factory in the Dominican Republic. It was the beginning of a beautiful relationship on both a personal and professional level with some really amazing people. When I was approached by Miami Cigar & Company for some input on the 2011 trip, never did I imagine I would be lucky enough to go back again.

From The Desk of Rene Castenada

The following made the rounds today and was penned by Rene Castenada. At first when I was asked to publish it here, I was not sure. But I see on facebook his health issue has become public for the most part and decided to go for it. Gary J. Arzt means a lot to me on so many levels. First of all he helped put me on the map and in the eyes of so many manufacturers. He has offered words of support and encouragement even if my typographical errors drive him crazy. But my relationship with Gary is more then a blogger, as over the 3 years of acigarsmoker we have had numerous conversations and laughs and he has been there for me when I needed insight.

Love him or hate him, there is no better friend to the cigar community. He is passionate about the cigar community, and like me often at times, speaks with no filter. Perhaps that is why I get along with him so well..

You know winter is coming to an end when Spring Training begins in Florida and Arizona. Sure we all love our winter sports like football and hockey, but nothing beats the nightly ball game and a cigar with your favorite adult beverage. As a Yankees fan this spring is a little different then the past. We knew who our 5 starters were, who was going to make up the bullpen and the only position up for grabs was utility infielder. This year as a fan of the Bronx Bombers things are a little different. Who will be the backup catcher, who will fill out 4 and 5 in the rotation and who will win the 4th OF slot as well as the utility infielder. It’s that time of the year to make predictions so here we go.

Cigar Review: La Aurora Gold Preferidos Tubo

Last year I was part of a group of bloggers that was graciously invited by Miami Cigar & Company to the La Aurora factory in Santiago, Dominican Republic and I had the time of my life. In fact, I considered the trip to a be a life changing event. Not only did I make great friends within the blogging community I managed to stay close with Jason Wood from Miami Cigar & Company as well as Amaury Abreau, Manuel Innoa, Jose Manuel, Jose Blanco and Guillermo Leon from La Aurora. As luck would have it, I got invited back this year with a new group of bloggers. While there from March 17th to 20th I will working on a series of stories for The Cigar Network Magazine. Stay tuned because on Sunday we will tell you how to get a subscription for 15% of the regular rates.

Cigar Review: La Aurora Gran 107

107crop

The story on the Gran 107 has the rollers in factory smoking these large sizes and during a recent trip to the factory Guillermo was asked what the rollers were smoking. After some sampling of the product Guillermo gave his blessing for the cigar to go into production. Being that the United States has gotten so much into large ring gauge cigars this 7 x 58 monster should be well received. As you know we tend to be on the fence when it comes to the size, so when Miami Cigar sent us some to sample we hesitantly smoked them to formulate our review.

News: Miami Cigar to Donate 5K To The Love Fund

Further proving that the cigar community is one of the most giving communities in the world Miami Cigar announced today a fundraiser to raise $5,000 to the Dade County Love Fund in response to Roger Castillo and Amanda Haworth being killed while serving an arrest warrant in Liberty City last week. These two officers made the ultimate sacrifice in there commitment to serve & protect and it is important that we do no forget them and other police officers wounded and fallen in the line of duty.

According to Jason Wood Maketing Manager for Miami Cigar & Company, “The Mirandas were very moved by the funeral service for the two slain Police Officers. They are very aware of the recent increase in violence against Police Officers.” The Mirandas learned about The Love Fund yesterday, and asked Wood and MC&C Vice President Rene J. Cataneda to organize this event immediately.

Top 15 Cigars of 2010

top15_2010

Every year many cigar smokers look forward to the yearly release of Top Cigars from Cigar Aficionado. In fact I know one person from New Jersey who usually uses that list to make a large purchase of boxes as put out by that magazine. Love them or hate them manufacturers want to get on that list. However, the last few years I have not agreed with many cigars that make the list. While the Casa Magna is a great stick was it really deserving of cigar of the year?

The criteria to make out list is simple, it had to be released in 2010.

Well after spending the better part of Sunday morning and early afternoon trying to install a plugin called User Photo I have put it to rest. The end of the year is approaching us and many changes are in store for the cigar industry. Earlier this week we broke the news about a merger happening between Miami Cigar & Company with La Aurora Cigars. As a partnership one has to assume some of the La Aurora catalog will have a reduction in price.

Cigar Review: Broadway Series by La Aurora Cigars

Broadway Series by La Aurora

The cigar companies are coming to the aide of the New York Tobacconists. This week saw the release of two new cigars for my hometown market and today following up the interview with Rene Castaneda where he discusses the Broadway Series and he also talks about Miami Cigar & La Aurora becoming one company we share our thoughts on the Broadway Series by La Aurora.

As I stated in another review…

La Aurora Unveils Broadway Series for New York State only
The Affordable Cigar Debuts Monday December 20 at Cigar Inn.

MIAMI FL – Miami Cigar & Company, the exclusive U-S distributor for La Aurora, announces help is on the way for New York. Tobacconists are suffering under harsh tobacco tax of 75% of wholesale cost which prices many cigars out of the average smoker’s reach. La Aurora vice president Guillermo León says it is time for action to help smokers. As a result, León and Miami Cigar and Company President Nestor Miranda are releasing a special Broadway Series by La Aurora with a suggested retail price of $12.25 including the onerous NY state tobacco tax.

Cigar Review: Nestor Miranda Art Deco

artdecocloseup

The first time I had this cigar was back at IPCPR in August when I was lucky enough to be invited to have a drink with Jason Wood, Rene Castenada and Nestor Miranda at the Rusty Nail in New Orleans. We sat around and drank some Abita beer when Nestor offered me one of the Art Deco smokes. The atmosphere can definitely make a cigar that is why I waited til now to review this cigar that has a bit of a buzz around it.

The smoke is available in tins of 21, and are produced by My Father Cigars for Miami Cigar & Company and marks a departure for sticks created at the My Father Factory. “We wanted to get Pepin out of his comfort zone, which is using Nicaraguan tobacco,” said Nestor Miranda. “He accepted the challenge and came out with an amazing blend using 40% Dominican tobacco.”

Cigar Review: La Sirena

La Sirena

La Sirena is the newest cigar to be distributed by Miami Cigar & Company and it is being produced by the My Father factory in Nicaragua. If that wasn’t reason enough to be excited. the cigar features a Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper. But before we get into the particulars allow me to give you some back story about this cigar.

I first got to smoke a few of these when the concept was coming close to reality. Having known brand ambassador Arielle Ditkowich and her family for some time I was asked to try one and that first one left me less then impressed. But then again any cigar short of the mildest of mild would of done that time. It was 11:00 I hadn’t had my morning coffee or breakfast. The strength of the cigar was multiplied at that time of the morning. Well fast forward a few weeks and I smoked one under proper smoking conditions and it was at that time I fell in love with these sticks.
