Event Recap: Delaware Cigar Festival

As the fall weather began to take hold in the Northeast the stage was set for the 5th Delaware Cigar Festival, organized by Gary Griffith. Gary who is associated with Cigar-ette City and the creator of Emilio and Grimalkin cigars put on a clinic on how a cigar festival should be run.

The event was held at Delaware Park under cloudy skies with the likes of Arielle Ditkowich, brand manager for La Sirena Cigars, Eddie Ortega from EO Brands, Clint Aaron of 262 Cigars and numerous reps from Rocky Patel, JC Newman, Drew Estate, Altadis, Oliva, Kristoff, Perdomo, La Flor Dominicana, Cigar Rights of America, Miami Cigar, General Cigar and The Cigar Agency.

News: Sam Leccia Banned From 2011 IPCPR Trade Show *Updated 7/17/11*

samlecciacigarco

The following was posted by Sam Leccia on his Facebook account moments ago, “I am saddened to announce that my Debut is on hold. I have been barred from attending the Cigar Show by court order. I will however, be vigorously pursuing Oliva’s failure to fulfill it’s contractual obligations to me and my family. I have faith in the legal system and I will see you all as soon as possible. Thank You all, from the bottom of my heart, for your continued support.”

This is sad news and it is quite obvious the Nub brand has developed well without Sam at the helm, and one would think the marketplace would be big enough for both to get a piece of. It also leaves a sour taste in our stomach as this piece of gamesmanship is pretty petty. More as it develops…

Breaking News guys! Sam Leccia, a cigar innovator, has announced that he is going to be starting his own cigar company: The Sam Leccia Cigar Company!

I sure can’t wait to see what he has up his sleeves. His last innovation was absolutely stunning and disrupted the cigar industry. Here’s the press release:

Studio Tobac ST-DS001 – Cigar Review

STDS001_Band

A few weeks ago I was at Cigar Expo helping out the guys from Miami Cigar & Company by manning the La Aurora Cigar booth. The regular rep had an even scheduled in Philadelphia so I was asked by the VP of Sales to cover for him. While there I ran into Ian Hummel from Oliva Cigars & Studio Tobac. At the end of the show when I went to say goodbye and he gifted me an Oliva V. I noticed a cigar in his pocket, and being the rude bastard I can be I lifted it out to see what it was. Well, Ian insisted I take it and smoke it despite my refusal. The last thing I want to create with this blog is a vehicle for free cigars. I don’t wish to be considered a cigar weasel. With Ian reassuring me I wasn’t I accepted the cigar.

Oliva Grand Maduro – Cigar Review

OlivaGrandMaduro_Band

One of the cigar shops I spend a lot of time at is Cigar Inn, located on 2nd avenue between 53rd and 54th Street in New York City. Not only are the 3 brothers that own it great people, but so is the eclectic mix of people who hang out there on a regular basis. The store has a high volume of customers and they tend to order a lot of items. Because of this sometimes, they have to store boxes in their warehouse where they become lost over time only to be found again. Recently they uncovered some original Tony Bahia Gold cigars which I sadly, missed out on. Then a few weeks later they uncovered today’s cigar which I pounced on.

Cain Daytona 646 – Out of the Box Cigar Review

caindaytonaband

A short while back Charlie Minato of The Cigar Feed posted a wish list of sorts, and one of the items was a request reviewers let a cigar sit in their personal humidor for 30 days before they review it. An excellent idea except for one thing, when a new cigar is released the race is on amongst bloggers to get it reviewed in a timely fashion. For the most part it is a friendly competition, as there is a camaraderie among many of the sites we read on a regular basis. But as pointed out by Brian Hewitt of Stogie Review, “[I] have noticed significant changes in mere weeks of rest, especially with new sticks.” So I figured my plan is this, when a new cigar is released I will review one vitola right out of the box, and a different size in about 30 days. While this might create a little repetitiveness in the website it should be more fair to everyone involved from manufacturer to retail shop owner, and the consumer.

Sneak Peak: Cain F Lancero Tubos

Thanks to our good friend Ian Hummel over at Studio Tobac we were given access to a photograph of the new Cain F Lancero Tubos. The design is sleek and looks great. For some odd reason the first thing I think of when I see them is NASCAR despite not being a fan. How great would it be to see Studio Tobac sponsor a car on the Nascar Track utilizing these colors. Of course the car might wreck a little bit easier because according to my car insurance it is more expensive to insure a red car due to a high risk of accidents.

Cigar News: Studio Tobac to Release Cain-F Lancero

Cain F Lancero

Wow, Oliva is introducing a new size for their Cain line, the Lancero. With a unanimous vote from the Board of Studio Tobac, Oliva is going to begin to produce their new Cain F Lancero. However, according to the press release, “the lancero will not be in regular production and therefore will not be for sale to the general public. The Cain F Lancero will only be available in The Limited Edition Studio Tobac Cigar Sampler.” The Cain F Lancero is likely to be packaged in an aluminum tube along with other limited edition cigars to be gifted with a box purchase. Sounds like the presentation alone is going to be an attraction.

Cigar News: Nub Line Extensions & Studio Tobac

Looks like Studio Tobac is planning to include tubos to the Nub line of cigars. As we know the former face of the brand Sam Leccia is gone from Oliva Cigars. The reason behind is leaving is open to speculation and we’re probably not going to find out soon – based on this article by stogiereview.

Anyway, tangents aside, at a small Tuesday gathering at the Cigar Inn, Barry took out his trusty smart-phone and shared a peek of Nub’s new packaging. Looks like the Nubs are going to come in small tubos too and let’s hope the prices of these competitively priced tasty smokers aren’t going to be raised.

Cigar Review: Oliva V Maduro 2010

vmaduroband

So over the past couple of weeks my local shops got in their allotment of the Oliva V Maduro 2010. I picked up a couple of sticks here, and a a few more there. This was a huge change from the 2009 edition for me as I purchased 2 boxes last year but out of those 20 sticks, 18 of them had horrible draw issues and it left me turned off. Sad to say over the past year I didn’t nearly smoke as many Oliva cigars despite having a great relationship with the local rep. I was just turned off by the “wasted money” of 2 boxes with bad draws.

So here we are in 2010 and the question is, Will these 2010 V Maduro’s be as great at the 2008 batch, or a horrible as the 2009 version. Or perhaps fall somewhere in between. Here is my answer… How does it compare to yours?

Cigar Review: Cain F Nub

cainnublabel

Nub Cigars are something I hold near and dear to my heart. While not necessarily my favorite cigar on the market I always reach for them on occasion because of what they they mean for the history of this website. More then 2 years ago at the launch for Nub I went to an event where I met Sam Leccia the founder and creator of Nub Cigars. It was his words that inspired me to start this website which has continued to grow since its inception. I have met many new friends because of it, some of who are very dear to my heart. It has also opened the door to an industry I so want to be a part of. While I have not yet found a job within the cigar world, I feel I provide a service to my fellow Brothers & Sisters of the Leaf. So thank you once again Sam for you inspiration.

Cigar Review: Oliva V

So I came home yesterday to discover my DSL connection was operating at the speed of a 28.8 modem. This was not good because I had no reviews in the bank and I had to get a review up for Monday. I thought I would wait til Monday morning but that turned to be a mistake as it took me back to my days of my 2400 baud modem on my Commodore 64.

Cigar Review: Cain Maduro

I finally got my hands on the Cain cigars from the mind of Sam Leccia gifted to me by the local Oliva representative who is one of the better guys in the business. The Cain is triple fermented and contains 82% ligero. It comes in two forms, the Cain Habano and the Cain Maduro. There [...]
