I just read up on Saint Valentine on the web, and there is nothing to suggest that this martyr of the Catholic church has anything to do with the traditions of modern Valentine’s Day. The feast of St. Valentine first occurred in the year, 496 and it was established by Pope Gelasius I. In fact no one really is sure who Saint Valentine was as he appeared in various martyologies. Throughout history he has been described as a priest in Rome, a bishop or priest in Interamna or a Martyr in the Roman province of Africa. Knowing that what I am about to say isn’t sacrilegious makes me feel more comfortable knowing that God will not strike me down for this view, but I will probably further secure my seat in hell. For me, I picture hell as being a room full of excellent cigars but not having anything to light them with.

Cigar Review: Tatuaje Black Petite Robusto

tatblackpetiterobustolabel

A couple of weekends back I got to hang our with Pete from Tatuaje to celebrate his birthday a few days early instead of the official December 7th. Despite Pete being sick we had a great time with some incredible food. Steak, fish stuffed with shrimp & lobster, chicken and baked ziti the gang at Tobacco plaza really spared no expense on what was a great time.

One of the deals at the event was if you bought a box, you got some swag, a hat, and cigars. Well some of the cigars you got was a a 3 pack of Tatuaje Black in 3 sizes. Corona, Robusto, and a Petite Robusto. There have long been rumors that the Tatuaje Black would make a re-appearance and that they would be available in a bit wider of a release and the fact that these cigars differed from the original production one has to wonder if those days are close.

Today I am reviewing the Petite Robusto to see how it compares to the Corona. The comparison isn’t scientific or anything since a lot of things can effect how a cigar tastes but I hope it shows how size matters.

This past weekend I got to hang our with Pete from Tatuaje to celebrate his birthday a few days early instead of the official December 7th. Cigar Review: Tatuaje Anarchy

tatuajeanarchyband

A few months back a website appeared on the Internet promoting Tatuaje Anarchy and a lot of people were intrigued to what was going on. But the mystique as to what or who was behind it was answered relatively quickly due to some copyright searches. In case you still don’t know what the Tatuaje Anarchy is about, allow me to explain.

Abe who owns Smoke Inn in Florida has had a great relationship with Pete Johnson from Tatuaje and he approached him about doing a cigar for his shops 15th Anniversary. A new cigar, size and blend that would be a limited edition but made in enough quantity that people should not have a problem getting these. Given the success of this great marketing campaign that is no small order.

Cigar Review: Tatuaje HCS

petejohnsonholtsband

Yesterday I spent the evening in Philadelphia since my job took me into South Philadelphia earlier in day and has become custom I stop over at Holt’s for a few cigars and a trip upstairs to Mahogany. While chatting with Lee the assistant manage he showed me the new Pete Johnson stick, the Holts Cigar Shop exclusive. The HCS also known as “tattoo” was a nice will find.

According to the Holt’s website, “Our good friend Pete Johnson has hooked us up with another outstanding gem! Tatuaje HCS is ”Tattoo” Pete’s latest project out of the Garcia factory and it could be the finest cigar he’s ever made. It could be the silky-smooth Ecuadorian wrapper he chose to finish the cigar with, or the aged Nicaraguan fillers that create the foundation of these treats, but whatever it is these cigars are a delicious, absolute must-try. A rich, earthy-core of flavor gives way to sweet notes of cedar, creamy leather and spicy pepper as you revel in the full-bodied smoke. Pete may be kicking himself for making this masterpiece a Holt’s exclusive, but we aren’t complaining.”

What are my thoughts you may ask? Read on to find out!

Cigar Review: The Face

100_1496

Pete Johnson was working in the lab late one night, so our eyes can behold an eerie sight, from the rollers table the monsters began to rise, and suddenly to my surprise I was able to score a box from Tobacco Plaza. So from my effin caddy at the beach, I was able to light one up for review. The question remains though, will this be a Monster mash or a graveyard smash??

For the last 3 years Pete Johnson has released in limited numbers the Monster Series. The first was The Frank, the Second was The Drac and this year The Face which is in reference to Leatherface.

Cigar Review: Tatuaje Pork Tenderloin

Hello, my name is Barry and I am a Tatuaje addict. It doesn’t even stop at cigars, because I love girls with tattoos but that is a story for another time. Yes, I am a self admitted Pete Johnson whore. If Pete produces it I will buy it. It is simple as that. The latest venture into a cigar marketed by Pete Johnson is today’s review. You see my good friend Charlie who runs The Cigar Feed contacted me about this great cigar I had to try so he sent me one and I was crazy about it. So we got to talking on Twitter night and with the help of Big Doug we found someone who still had them in stock. After some discussion John who runs Well Capped, Charlie and myself decided to split the bundle. Normally I would of grabbed one myself but with a lot of other cigar commitments this month I had to go for the split.

Reports from the Floor: IPCPR Recap So Far

Guest post by Tom Johansmeyer of Cigar Reader. This week, I’m helping Barry with news from the floor of IPCPR. He’s been kind enough to send me notes, tweets and e-mails with the latest that’s happening in New Orleans, and I’ve been publishing over on Cigar Reader. Every day, I’ll come over here and put [...]

News: Pete Johnson Talks IPCPR 2010 & 2011

DSC08261

At Cigar Expo last weekend Pete Johnson was kind enough to talk with me and Tom from cigarreader.com about a little bit of everything. In Part 1 of our 2 part Interview we discussed the Futures, Monsters & Music. In this 2nd interview Pete gave us a little bit of a scoop about his new cigars that are coming out in 2011.

I’ve called various people in the industry friends and I know some of you think hey you help sell their cigars.. But when all the cigars were handed out at Cigar Expo Pete came to hang with us. We talked a solid 30 minutes before we asked him for an interview and easily another 20 minutes when the camera’s were off. It wasn’t all about cigars either…

News: Pete Johnson Talks Futures, Monsters & Music

I am a huge fan of Pete Johnson and I do not attempt to hide that. Not only are his cigars my go to smokes but he has been nothing short of great to me. I got the chance to talk to him with Tom from CigarReader.com the other day at Cigar Expo and Pete was very forthcoming with tons of information. In part one of a 2 part interview Pete talks about The Verite Futures, The Monster Series and Music. The interview quickly went downhill though which caused Pete to label it as the most fucked up interview he has ever done…

Cigar Review: NHC Seleccion Limitada Reserva

nhcreservalabel

On Monday we reviewed the NHC Seleccion Limitada which features a Habano wrapper. Today we take the time to review the same cigar but with a Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper and this review will prove what a difference a wrapper can make in a cigar. The same binder and filler are present, but the outcome is different.

The NHC Seleccion Limitada Reserva like the Habano wrapper are limited to about 500 boxes and can only be bought from one place on the internet and that is New Havana Cigars. For information on the price as well as a link please see the end of this review.

As you all know I am a self described Pete Johnson whore. If Pete releases a stick I do my best to get my hands on it. That is pretty much the deal here. According to the New Havana Cigars website, the project came about as there were many boxes lingering at the My Father [...]

Cigar Review: Tatuaje L’esprit de La Verite

verite08label

Recently I got to hang out with Pete Johnson at a couple of locations in New York and Philadelphia. While at Holt’s I was able to obtain a robusto of the Tatuahe L’espirit de La Vertie 2008. The cigar was part of a bonus in the purchase of a box of the new El Triunfador. Despite Tatuaje prices being a bit on the high end when it comes to prices, this cigar will raise the bar. It is expected to retail between $15.00 and $25.00 depending on the size.

The L’esprit de La Verite which translates to “The Spirit of the Truth” will be released yearly with a different blend of tobaccos from one farm and one crop.

Cigar: Tatuaje L’esprit de La Verite
Size: 5 x 50 (Robusto)
Wrapper: Habano Criollo (Nicaragua)
Binder: Habano Criollo (Nicaragua)
Filler: Habano Criollo (Nicaragua)
Strength: Medium
