Cigar Review: PDR 1878 Reserva Dominicana Capa Oscura

Just before I got sick I was contacted by Abe Flores of Pinar Del Rio asking if I would like to sample his new cigars. Having become a fan last year as the company took a turn for the better I eagerly jumped all over it. In my constant battle with my mailman the first set of samples sent to me never arrived. It seems if the box does not fit in my mailbox the mailman was leaving the box on the floor by the mailboxes instead of bringing them to my door. Well despite this I managed to tip my mailman this year and now the packages are left at my door and nothing has not yet showed up. Thankfully Abe sent out a second shipment and I apologize for the delay in getting these reviewed as having mild pneumonia knocked me down for the count (a saying I do not get, wouldn’t thank make me dead).

When Pinar Del Rio first burst onto the cigar scene a few years ago they weren’t met with a lot of love. The cigars had a cult following but general acceptance among cigar smokers was slow to come, at least in my neck of the woods. Well over the last year or so Abe Flores has slowly taken Pinar Del Rio to the next level. Having run into him at Cigar Expo held by Famous Smoke Shop I remember how happy Abe was about his new products and he gifted me with a few smokes including my first ever culebra.

Fast forward from May to August and again I ran into Abe Flores down in New Orleans in his home shop of Don Leoncio cigars and I fell in love with the 1878 Capa Madura. So a few weeks ago when Abe reached out to me to smoke his new cigars I was all for it. Today is the Natural version and next week we will review the Oscuro.

While in New Orleans the place to be as the day came to a close was Don Leoncio located on Canal Street. The place which is owned by the guys behind Pinar Del Rio is a cigar lounge with a good air condition system which was needed to beat the oppressive heat & humidity the city had to offer. As I made my way to the cigar store in the evening and night time hours I got to mingle with some good guys who own shops and many people I have becoming friendly with online.

While there I got to speak with Abe Flores and he offered me up some smoke to try and one of which was the PDR 1878. Before I left I purchased a few more of these to show my support and for the simple fact that I enjoyed them.

Saturday News: IPCPR Version 2.

Despite a lot of the new releases coming out a little early like the Rocky Patel 15th Anniversary and the CAO La Traviata Maduro there were a few surprises to the IPCPR that I didn’t know about. Now this doesn’t mean that they were a surprise to all but they did manage to catch me off guard.

EP Carrillo – I went out with a few of my fellow bloggers for lunch. Upon walking in I noticed Ernesto and his family sitting and having lunch. After a quick hello so has not to disturb their lunch I sat down in the back of the restaurant and enjoyed some Aligator. During the course of our meal Ernesto had the waiter come over and buy us a round of drinks which was totally classy.

Cigar Review: Pinar Del Rio Classico Exclusivo

Pinar del Rio Classico Exclusivo - 1

First of all let me give a big thank you to Walt over at stogiereview.com for allowing me to use his photo of this cigar. My camera failed me for some reason and the memory card was wiped out. No big deal as normally I would take another photo but I had none left in my humidor.

For a long time Pinar Del Rio has been on my radar but finding them in stores has been hard to do. Lately though I have noticed them appearing in more and more places. During my recent trip to the Dominican Republic for La Aurora I noticed the new factory that Pinar Del Rio built. From the outside it looks beautiful and I wished I was in my own car to stop and say hello. When I returned home I was shocked that I had not yet smoked any of the Lancero Classico Exclusivo sticks I had resting in my humidor. Today I smoked the last of those, and this is the review.
