Rocky Patel 50th – Cigar Review

Rocky50thBand

When I walked into my local hangout in NYC and saw the new Rocky Patel I had a look of WTF? on my face. With the local taxes these sticks were $30 a piece. Let’s face it when you think Rocky Patel you do not in terms of that price. Upon studying the packaging I had to wonder if he was taking lessons from Gurkha. Some fancy sequins and bright colors I chose to pass on these expensive sticks.

When I was putting together my list of top cigars of the year I felt guilty that I chose to pass on these and didn’t smoke one for consideration. So for the second time in a week I am doing a review based on one cigar.

The Rocky Patel 50th is a limited edition cigar that celebrates the 50th birthday of this cigar icon. Available in 3 sizes; Robusto, Toro and Torpedo wtih each size limited to 2000 boxes.

Thunder by Nimish – Cigar Review

Thunder Band

Thunder by Nimish Desai is the first cigar by the cousin of Rocky Patel. Made in Honduras the cigar is labled as a medium to full-bodied smoke. The cigars will be available in 3 sizes and retail for between $5.00 and $6.00. The sizes are Short Robusto (4.5 x 54) w/pig tail cap, Toro (6 x 52) and Torpedo (6.25 x 52). On a footnote I am writing this review on Saturday night as snow falls in New York City. There is a solid 2″ on the ground with another 1″ to 3″ due overnight. The temperature is a frigid 34 degrees Fahrenheit with a real feel temperature of 17 degrees, Fahrenheit. I know some will say that this weather is out of whack because of it, but I say Global Warming is a myth and an urban legend. I don’t ever remember snow or temperatures this cold, ever.

Rocky Patel Vintage 2003 Cameroon – Cigar Review

Rocky Patel Vintage 2003 Cameroon - Band

I didn’t really keep up to date this year with what was new and being introduced at the trade show this year by a few manufacturers. I chose to wait for them to appear in my local cigar shops and be surprised. Not knowing is better most of the time, and as a person who lacks patience it is better to just seem them as they appear. One of the cigars was the Vintage 2003 Cameroon by Rocky Patel which appeared at Cigar Inn this past week. According the The Cigar Feed, the stick is made at the General Factory in Honduras.

The Cameroon is offered as a Robusto (5.5 x 50 – $7.55); Toro (6.5 x 52 – ); Torpedo (6.25 x 52- ); Churchill (7 x 48 – $8.55) and a Sixty (6 x 60- $8.55)

FDA Involvement Must Be Stopped!

logos

The possibility of dark days for the tobacco industry is closer to a reality then ever before, but as retailers, consumers, and manufacturers the future is also bright if we get involved.

In 2009, President Barack Obama passed the Family Smoking & Prevention Act which left a loophole for the FDA involvement in the premium cigar industry. The law gave the FDA regulatory authority over all tobacco products, but to branch beyond cigarettes and smokeless, the agency must seek expanded authority. That is what they are doing with cigars, and why they must be stopped. If the FDA gets involved the way we enjoy our right to smoke will be changed forever. Prohibition 2.0 will become a step closer to reality.

Breakfast at Drapers for this year’s Little Puff

Little-Puff-2011-Save-The-Date

It looks like there’s some buzz about this year’s “Little Puff” in Washington DC. The little puff is only little name and it’s actually kind of a big deal:

The “Little Puff” is Draper’s signature fundraiser, an intimate gathering of cigar lovers (limited to 300 people). Proceeds from ticket sales and the auction benefit three local academic scholarships (The Erik Kristensen Memorial Scholarship in honor of a Navy SEAL killed in action; The Pat Krimm Scholarship & The Anne Berman Memorial Scholarship).

Sneak Peak: Thunder by Nimish

BigRifle

Recently some bloggers have been sent some samples on the new sticks from Nimish Desai and while normally I wouldn’t post a review based on un-banded samples I was blown away from the samples sent. While many details won’t be known until an official press release later this week, this is what we do know. The cigars will be available in 3 sizes and retail for between $5.00 and $6.00. The sizes are…

Press Release: Rocky Patel & EO Brands

News came down the pipeline today officially announcing the release of some new EO Brands, and Rocky Patel sticks. While some of this has been around for a while, the press release I guess makes it official.

Q & A with Jose Blanco

Jose, thank you for taking the time to teach me more and more about tobacco everytime we meet. As a fellow Yankee fan we share a common bond that is only surpassed by our love of cigars. I look toward the time when we can sit back and enjoy a cigar together.

News recently rocked the cigar world that Jose Blanco was stepping down from his position at La Aurora and retiring. Now that the dust has settled we got to catch up with Jose Blanco who is currently enjoying himself on a European vacation. During our brief conversation, one can read between the lines and say he left the door open a bit for a return to the cigar industry and this might not be the end of his career.

Salem NH (April 18, 2011) – Two Guys Smoke Shop of Salem, Nashua, and Seabrook, New Hampshire will be celebrating its 26th Anniversary on September 21, by giving away a classic automobile, a 1936 Cadillac Fleetwood.

Event Recap: New Jersey Cigar Festival

Cigar-Fest-Logo-for-A-Cigar-Smoker-12.22.10

On a beautiful Sunday afternoon, Newark Bears baseball stadium became the field of dreams for cigar smokers. As I lined up with the VIPs in the morning, with my cigar in hand it felt weird to be smoking at a baseball stadium, but at the same time it felt right. As the gates opened, we walked in and were given our VIP bag which was small compared to other events but of higher quality then most… Inside the VIP bag was a humidor, with cigars such as the Avo 85th, Nestor Miranda Danno 2010, Tatuaje Red Label, Alec Bradley Tempus, Martin Family of Cigars, Los Blancos, Reinaldo and Joya De Nicaragua as well as various others.

Once inside the event had more of a…

News: 601 & Rocky Patel Edicion Limitada

601

It seems that due to popular demand Eddie Ortega & Erik Espinosa are changing the bands on the 601. After the redesign there was a lot of complaints about how they looked and some took the band change as the sign of a new blend. The new redesign looks like the original with some minor changes and I am sure customers and retailers are happy to see this.

In other news Patrick Vivalo, the sales executive from Rocky Patel emailed me that once again there will be a release of the Decade Edicion Limitada. Like last year, these will be limited to 500 boxes of each size; Robusto, Toro & Torpedo. The sticks should start to appear in Brick & Mortars this week.

Cigar Review: Rocky Patel Vudu

RPVuduBand

Well being that I am currently snowbound in New York City I figured I would do a bonus review. Rumour has it the Sanitation Department of New York City is involved in a work slow down and that is why it is taking so long to dig out. The reason for the slow down, well it seems that a lot of people have recently been demoted lately due to budget issues and that their is an upcoming contract negotiation around the corner.

A while ago I was sent a Rocky Patel sampler back from Famous Smoke Shop who is an advertiser on this website. According to the Famous website the Rocky Patel Vudu is…

Also in New York City is a scheduled hearing on the outdoor smoking ban that would ban smoking in pedestrian plazas, beaches, and city owned parks. What bothers me the most about this is that once the plan was first announced there has been no sighting of any of the tobacco groups in the mainstream news other then a debate on the local news channel New York 1.
